Professional Math Tutor - HEOP Summer Program

The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at Mount Saint Mary College is seeking a professional math tutor for the 2017 Summer Academic Institute. The HEOP summer program prepares the HEOP pre-freshmen for college life, initiates the process of building academic skills and orients the student to the support services available through HEOP and the College.

The HEOP provides educational opportunity for New York State residents who, due to issues of economic and academic disadvantage, might not otherwise have the opportunity to obtain an education at an institution such as MSMC.

The math tutor must be equipped to provide students with supplemental instruction in Basic Math Skills through Algebra level coursework.

The program is scheduled to run from July 5th – August 4th, with classes beginning on July 10th. Classes traditionally meet 4 times per week for approximately 2 hours per day with tutoring sessions in the evening.  Tutors must be available during student’s subject class time as well as evening hours for individual tutoring sessions.

A bachelor’s degree, Master’s is preferred, from an accredited institution of higher education is required; experience with diverse, non-traditional student populations, including ELL/ESL, is a plus.

Tutors selected for the HEOP must support the mission of Mount Saint Mary College, which is to provide a liberal arts education in the Catholic/Dominican tradition.

Candidates should submit their resume, contact information for three references and a cover letter that demonstrates 1) the candidate’s knowledge of issues confronting first-generation college students from low-income households in the context of higher education and college success; and, 2) a brief outline of the candidate’s philosophy toward providing writing instruction to students served by programs such as HEOP.

A background check will be required.
