RESEARCH SPECIALIST D
Duties: In this position the Research Specialist D will be responsible for fulfilling the needs of BARDA contracts to the University of Pennsylvania related to the measurement of certain coagulation parameters in Gottingen minipigs that have been exposed to various doses of ionizing radiation. Plasma samples, as well as organ/tissue samples, will be evaluated in these studies using several different methods, which include ELISA assays and measurements of various coagulation parameters on Coagulation Analyzers provided by Siemens. In addition, organ samples will be prepared for histological and immunohistochemistry analyses, and the organs will be evaluated to determine the levels of various analytes related to coagulation (e.g., fibrin deposition) in eight organs/tissues (heart, gastrointestinal tissue, lung, liver, kidney, thymus, spleen and vascular endothelium). All of the studies being performed are designed to evaluate the role of RIC in causing adverse health effects. No treatment of animals will occur as part of this work; the animals are being maintained and exposed to radiation at other institutions (either the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute or SNBL) and biological samples are being sent to the University of Pennsylvania for our analyses.
Position is contingent on continued funding.
