Position Summary

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is administratively housed in the Office of the Chancellor. The University's seventeen teams compete as members of NCAA Division I and the Southern Conference.

The Assistant Coach is responsible for administering the year-round activities of the Cross Country and Track Program and directly responsible to the Head Coach in all matters related to the operation of the program.

Duties & Responsibilities Include:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and instruct student-athletes as it specifically relates to technique and strategy within the sports of cross country and track
  • Recruiting student-athletes; is an essential element of the Assistant Coach's responsibility;
  • Development and coordination of a recruiting network; an ongoing activity requiring travel throughout the United States during the entire year;
  • Using discretion and personal judgment in the assessment of talent and the recommendation for scholarship assistance;
  • Communicating with the department's Spartan Academic Support Services personnel and assisting in student athletes'
    academic action plans;
  • Performing other administrative duties including, but not limited to, scheduling, travel arrangements and equipment management;
  • Following the policies and procedures of the University and the NCAA in day-to-day operation of the program;
  • Being actively involved in relationships tracking: Admissions, Academic Advising, and Financial Aid via the Director of Compliance;
  • Performing other duties as directed by supervisor.

Once the student-athlete has matriculated the Assistant Coach is primary in the weekly monitoring of the student-athletes' academic progress by recording any grades, papers, etc. on a regular basis.

Position requires someone with initiative and energy level that will enable the individual to work long hours; including evening and weekend assignments.

The position is available July 1, 2017.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior participation and/or coaching experience in middle distance and distance events
  • CPR/AED Certification
  • Completion of the Division I Coaches Exam through Compliance
