BME Business Manager

Position Summary

This position will report to the Business Manager of the Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (IQ) and will provide executive level counsel in the ongoing educational, research, and outreach missions to support the operations, sustainability, and growth of the department. The administrator will be instrumental in faculty recruitment, and responsible for overall management of the business office including short-term, long-term financial, personnel, and strategic planning for the department; prepares and administers the general fund budget; monitors and approves expenditures; tracks commitments; provides human resource management for the department; prepares personnel forms for faculty, academic staff, and support staff for submission; reviews and approves all personnel actions for the department; manages and submits faculty/academic staff and support staff raise process; maintains labor relations including interpreting union contracts; oversees the graduate program and the graduate assistant budget; approves graduate student appointments; manages academic activities for department; creates and implements department policies and procedures; educates faculty and staff about proper financial practices; provides oversight and administrative direction for grant management and compliance; analyzes data and completes research in order to compile reports as requested; coordinates space allocations, renovation projects, and general department facilities; assists chairperson with unit reporting and special projects.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business or a related field or a field which corresponds to the particular employing unit; three to five years of related  and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in accounting, management, budget preparation, word processing, database, spreadsheet, and web page software; and/or in performing responsibilities closely related to the operational activities of the employing unit or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a business related field; knowledge of university policies/procedures, university accounting, and MSU’s Enterprise Business Systems (EBS); experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat; ability to establish priorities, multi-task, and meet deadlines; ability to work under pressure; proactive problem solving; taking initiative; work as part of a team and independently; strong attention to detail; possess organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; continuous self-improvement; ability to keep abreast of new information and communication technology.
