Position Summary

Duties and responsibilities of this position include: examination of fish and collection and processing of fish tissues for analysis; performance, optimization, and validation of laboratory assays (serologic, biochemical, molecular, cell culture) to detect the presence of pathogens; performing DNA and RNA extractions; maintenance and inoculation of cell lines; store, organize, inventory and dispose of laboratory specimens, reagents, and supplies; interaction with other laboratory personnel regarding sharing of specimens, clarifying tasks, and identifying and solving problems; preparation, sterilization, dispensing, labeling and storing of a variety of culture media, reagents, solutions and materials; performance of quality control procedures; accurately recording and retrieving data for quality control purposes; operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; consultation with other laboratory personnel to provide information and lab results; disposal of hazardous waste; assist student employees in washing and sterilizing lab tools and glassware and preparation of various supplies for laboratory tasks supported by this position; assist with husbandry of live fish; and other general laboratory maintenance. Working hours are between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., will vary to include weekends and holidays as needed and is subject to call back in the case of laboratory need and/or in urgent response situations.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/ certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.

Desired Qualifications

Laboratory experience in diagnostics of fish pathogens. Also valued are experience in manuscript editing/preparation. The individual should have strong communication and interpersonal skills, and proven track record of working well with others to accomplish desired goals and objectives;a self-starter who pays attention to details. Proficiency in MS Office.

Work Hours

VARIABLE ( Full time. Working hours are between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and may vary to include weekends and holidays. )

Description of End Date

This position is a limited term position funded until June 30, 2018 with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Summary of Physical Demands

Duties associated with this position involve lifting of large items less than 50 pounds.

Summary of Health Risks

Work with animals or fixed/unfixed animal tissue.
