Some highlights and details associated with this position:

  • College Campus work schedule of Monday - Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Over the summer, that changes to Monday - Thursday 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with Friday off, *Schedule is contingent on Departmental needs.
  • Health benefits, The District offers several plans to employees, many of them at no cost to the employee. Additionally, Butte College employees have access to two Health and Wellness Centers through Butte Schools Self-Funded Programs. Employees can receive free or reduced cost care (depending on plan election).
  • This year's winter break will be from December 21 - January 1 with pay.
Overview
Under the direction of an administrator, the Technical Computing Specialist II will research, develop, recommend and maintain procedures and solutions relating to the administration and implementation of the centralized support of campus-wide desktop and mobile computer systems and connected applications and services. The Technical Computing Specialist II will also provide campus-wide and department based technical services and support which include, but is not limited to, research and selection for purchase, installing, configuring, diagnosing, maintaining and repairing of District computing hardware (desktop, laptop and mobile), software (operating systems and applications), and associated wiring and peripheral hardware.



Representative Duties:

The duties recorded below are representative of the duties of the class and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by incumbent(s) of any particular position. The essential duties of the class are indicated with an asterisk *

  1. Develops and implements strategies, procedures and technologies to secure campus-wide desktop, labs and mobile technologies using enterprise-level tools and methods, including, but not limited to, anti-virus, anti-spyware, imaging solutions, applications, operating system upgrades and patching, application delivery, etc*
  2. Performs testing, deployment for patching and updating of operating systems and applications as determined through research to ensure maximum effectiveness and customer service when deploying campus-wide application and security patches and updates*
  3. Monitors technological trends and performs technical testing for hardware and software applications for district-wide implementation. Acts as a primary resource for enterprise level technical/theoretical questions from faculty, staff and students*
  4. Participates, within a team, regarding enterprise level issues, including coordinating and performing troubleshooting, documentation development and facilitating required hardware and software repairs to optimize campus computers, applications and enterprise solutions, etc*
  5. Participates in the development of goals/objectives and plans to support the enterprise and assigned areas. Consults with individual departments to determine and recommend needs that allow for full use of campus systems; assists in the procurement and installation of technologies*
  6. Develops technological models, both theoretical and practical, to determine requirements for new and existing office computer systems and labs in multiple disciplines; advises and assists users in determining needs and evaluating models for instructional technology capabilities to support curriculum, programs and departments; assists with procuring appropriate equipment, software and software licensing, according to campus standards*
  7. Diagnoses and develops successful solutions for technical, physical and/or theoretical problems that have been identified; replaces and/or installs electronic hardware components which are necessary to restore system functionality. May write programs and scripts in support of desktop related applications and projects or that are necessary to ensure system functionality*
  8. Installs, configures, tests, documents, maintains, performs diagnostics and repairs computer desktop systems, mobile devices, laptops, hardware and software, peripherals and associated components; performs specified functions associated with customer facing servers, software, associated services and thin clients*
  9. Performs specified functions within the Active Directory under specific guidelines; performs tests, diagnostics and troubleshooting for systems that are connected to core technologies, to include, LAN/CAN/WAN's, data and telecommunication networks, wireless networks, multimedia paraphernalia, and specialized instruments*
  10. Assists with coordinating the installation or reconfiguration of systems for targeted rooms and/or areas to ensure the capabilities of the facility are maintained with the appropriate requirements for the users of the facility. Ensures all installed systems comply with approved District and department policies, procedures and standards*
  11. Participates on desktop and services technical teams in support of enterprise-wide technical projects. May provide project leadership to immediate team; effectively communicates and reports on assigned projects*
  12. Maintains records of user requests for support that detail hardware and software configurations and any changes that are applied, for all desktop, laptop, mobile systems and associated hardware. Prepares reports for management that summarize the status of user requests; communicates with users in a timely fashion regarding the status of their requests*
  13. Maintains a variety of desktop, laptop and mobile device testing equipment peripherals and an array of analysis tools*
  14. Performs work from plans, sketches, schematics, blueprints or other forms of instructions or diagrammatic representations pertaining to computer labs and offices. May serve on teams for architectural designs for computer labs and offices*
  15. Develops resource requirements for assigned area of responsibility; specifies, procures and maintains a reasonable inventory of spare parts used in offices and computer labs and for associated peripherals to assist in the assurance of uninterrupted campus system operations*
  16. Strives to provide continuous improvement of technical service support. Regularly analyzes the performance of technical support provided of assigned areas of responsibility and may implement changes in operations, equipment and/or configurations based on the outcome of the analysis performed*
  17. Communicates to supervisor any issues that may cause or are causing poor performance.
  18. May facilitate some departmental operations during the absence of supervisor, as assigned; reports department status to administrator in charge.
  19. May serve on a variety of District committees as requested.
  20. May perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.


Qualifications/Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • The completion of a formal trade apprenticeship program or an Associate's Degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or a related field or the equivalent*; AND
  • Three (3) years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of this class; AND
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. or equivalent**.
* Associate's Degree education equivalency equals two (2) years of increasingly responsible work experience for each full year (24-30 units) of college. (College and experience may be combined, but may not replace, the required Minimum Qualifications.)
**High School education equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license throughout duration of employment with the District.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and operation of desktop and laptop computers in a managed Microsoft Active Directory enterprise environment.
  • Experience working with and understanding networking principles, application, print and file servers, mobile device technologies and with desktop management tools.
  • Possession of A+, Network+ or MCSE Certifications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: May be acquired through education, training, and/or experience.
Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; PC and Mac hardware and associated peripheral devices such as printers and scanners, etc.; mobile devise technologies, operations and maintenance; operating systems for PC's, Mac's and mobile devices; computing and application security principles and best practices; desktop and mobile management solutions (e.g. SCCM, Airwatch, Ghost, Deep Freeze); LAN/CAN/WAN devices and networking protocols; common network and telephone wiring standards and wiring installation/maintenance techniques; software applications configured for stand-alone, network (server based) and cloud systems; laws and ordinances pertaining to the specific responsibilities of the position; educational systems; communication strategy skills; information architecture; programming and coding techniques for scripting languages; computerized and electronic equipment; troubleshooting techniques; methods and procedures utilized in the maintenance and repair of computer hardware and software applications and associated peripherals; reporting tools; and current technologies.

Supplemental Information:

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No assigned permanent staff to supervise. May provide training to new staff. May provide work direction and/or training to student and short-term employees.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Normal office environment subject to occasional lifting of low to moderate weight (5 to 25 lbs.) items, monitors, CPU's, printers and other related computer parts; subject to installation of temporary walls, assembly of furniture and use of ladders for running cable; continuous walking, setting up of objects (labs), driving and operation of equipment is required.

Office and/or lab environment; subject to noise from computer operations; hazards of high voltage electrical wiring and panels; hazardous environment; hot and cold attics and crawl-spaces, dust, insulation and climbing ladders.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  1.
