RESEARCH TECHNICIAN II (Tomaras lab)

Duke Human Vaccine Institute is seeking a detail-oriented scientist to fulfill a key role as Research Technician 2 to prepare critical reagents to support multiplexed binding antibody assays in an immune monitoring core lab. The reagents created by the person in this role are used for assays that provide data to inform human clinical and pre-clinical trials for HIV and malaria. This person will also be performing binding assays in the lab to test these and other reagents as well as optimizing assay conditions and testing feasibility of novel methods. Must be very organized, possess excellent communication skills, have technical precision, be interested in assay development and optimization, enjoy working in a fast-paced lab environment with multiple priorities, and be able to work well as part of a team.

Job functions include:
  • Perform and develop methods for protein antigen: bead coupling procedure to produce reagents necessary for high-throughput multiplexed immunoassays utilized in an immune-monitoring core lab. Coordinate with lab members for goals and planning each week to maintain coupled bead inventory. Work toward improving the efficiency and throughput of bead-coupling procedures and practice.
  • Perform multiplexed immunoassays and other assays in the lab to develop new methods and protocols, optimize reagents, test various conditions, and determine feasibility of assays using novel antigens.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of antigens as well as coupled and uncoupled beads using lab inventory database. Order antigens from appropriate source when necessary. Notify managers when a new antigen lot has been coupled and needs to be tested. Assist in the tracking of antigens in regards to name and sequence changes. Keep supplies on hand with a well-planned inventory and ordering system.
  • Help lab manager and specimen coordinator with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP)-related tasks as needed. Assist with organization of specimen and reagent inventories and tracking in lab inventory database software as well as maintenance of equipment and necessary documentation. Assist with writing and editing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
  • Assist the laboratory and project managers by contributing to the overall effort to streamline the
  • workload, improve the efficiency of the immune-monitoring core, and contribute to the daily laboratory effort to adhere to GCLP guidelines. Maintain laboratory and associated equipment in a clean, well-ordered, and functional manner.
  • Maintain laboratory notebook in an orderly fashion for tracking experiments and results. Provide written updates of work each week.


Education, Skills, & Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in biological science or related field
  • Basic skills in laboratory techniques with technical precision
  • Must be able to manage multiple and rapidly changing priorities and have ability to quickly learn new skills
  • Must be detail-oriented, well organized with strong communication skills and ability to work in an fast-paced interactive team environment.
