RESEARCH TECHNICIAN I
Our laboratory is a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Center of Excellence that collaborates with NIH funded investigators in the discovery and characterization of novel drugs that target cell receptors and the signaling pathways mediating addiction. Complications of opiate use and dependence are currently a national crisis. As part of the effort to address the abuse potential of opiate drugs and the biochemical pathways responsible for their use, we are initiating a new project to investigate the self-administration of opioid drugs using an operant behavioral model in genetically-modified mice.

2. Operant Behavior Studies - Assist in carrying out behavioral studies at the Duke Mouse Behavioral Core. This will include tests evaluating locomotion, place preference, and self- administration of compounds in addiction models of acquisition, maintenance, reinforcement, extinction, and reinstatement.
3. Laboratory Skills- Ability to carry out murine-based behavior all assays requiring use of operant behavioral and other pieces of apparatus. The technician may be called upon to assist other members of the group in assays on an as needed basis and be responsible following training for independently carrying out assays, and acquiring, graphing, and interpretating data.
4. Administrative - Assist in maintaining the mouse inventory and entering data concerning the experiments in a Microsoft Access database.
