Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor's degree required preferably in communications, journalism, English, and/or marketing.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
1-2 years of experience in intensive writing, social media, communications.
Experience with philanthropy and demonstrated ability to translate academic service learning, engaged learning projects and research projects for general audiences preferred.
Experience in news or online journalism and/or higher education and university communications is desirable.
Experience developing, producing, and editing electronic and print communication material using InDesign and Photoshop.
Experience with constituent, volunteer or alumni stewardship efforts.
Experience with fundraising and development initiatives.
Experience with event planning and execution for varied audiences and attendance.
Experience with database management.
The Morgridge Center for Public Service, established in 1996, promotes citizenship and learning through service within local, national and global communities through various programs, services and resources. The mission of the Morgridge Center is to connect campus with community through service, service learning, and community-based research to build a thriving democratic society. The Morgridge Center leads the University of Wisconsin-Madison in preparing students to be their best civic selves for lifelong civic engagement by building capacity, in partnership with the community, to address complex problems locally and globally.
Under the supervision of and with support from the Assistant Director for Civic Engagement and Communications, this position will direct planning, strategy and content for communications and marketing that support the mission, vision and priorities of the Morgridge Center.
The Communications Specialist will be dedicated to working as part of a team, developing audience-focused feature stories, news releases, electronic newsletters, video content, social media content and other materials designed to promote and advance the Morgridge Center name, programs and events. This position will also oversee website maintenance, graphic design and brand. Strong interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to translate complex academic topics including service learning and community-based research for general audiences are essential.
The individual must be current in national trends and professional practices in communications and marketing, especially as they affect higher education.
