Duties include working with the Senior Academic Counselor, and the Director of Academic Advising to develop advising strategies and protocols. The Academic Counselor will oversee catalog updates for the department and will work with the Director, the Registrar's office and Academic Departments to accurately update degree audit requirements in PeopleSoft. This position will provide administrative support for the Director of Academic Advising, which may include special projects, research, report writing, and other duties. The Academic Counselor will take on specific projects as delegated by the Senior Academic Counselor or Director of Academic Advising, such as overseeing the SPARE program targeted to support students on academic probation, as well as doing orientation presentations, workshops for first year students, updating the department website or communications or represent Academic Advising by serving on University wide committees. Position may also advise special student populations requiring advanced knowledge of programs and procedures and may supervise student workers. Duties reflect substantial variety and complexity. Assignments are broad in nature and usually require creativity and attention to detail. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks and goals. Collaborates with the Director of Academic Advising in the training and development of other staff members, estimating personnel needs, meeting completion dates, interpreting and ensuring consistent application of organizational policies.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Interviews individuals to obtain information about interests, aptitudes, abilities, and other personal characteristics.
  • Appraises sources of information: student's scholastic record, personal history, test results, parental contacts, referral contacts, autobiographies, and firsthand observation.
  • Compares contents of each degree plan against the established requirements for a particular degree and notifies student if a problem exists.
  • Counsels students in person and over the phone concerning their academic requirements.
  • Confers with staff specialists and faculty members on problem cases. May refer individuals to other specialists for more intensive assistance.
  • Maintains general departmental records and records of individuals.
  • Participates in group activities designed to assist an individual in achieving selected educational, vocational and personal-social development goals.
  • Advises and counsels individual students.
  • Engages in follow-up activities and survey of students.
  • Functions cooperatively with staff, faculty, administrative officials and parents.
  • Confers with faculty or administrator with regard to academic policy issues, such as acceptable course substitutes for a particular degree.
  • Prepares and updates degree plans, student records, and files.
  • Observes safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree and two-three years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required:
  • Ability to effectively advise multiple and diverse degree programs, requiring. advanced knowledge of advising theory and practice.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and projects.
  • Ability to integrate and analyze information and develop reports.
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to compose effective and professional communiqus for both internal and external target markets and present information publicly.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including MS Office and student information systems.

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related discipline and one year of experience in academic counseling, academic advising, or related work; or any equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the equivalent knowledge, abilities, and skills.
  • Ability to organize and relate individual data into identifiable patterns of behavior and development.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a friendly and empathetic interest in people.
  • Ability to relate data obtained from the individual to the structure and dynamics of the individual's cultural environment.
  • Interest in and ability to assemble and disseminate environment information as it applies to the individual student.
  • Experience with student information systems (PeopleSoft, DARS).
  • Experience advising in one of the degree programs offered at UNT Dallas.
  • Experience in programs for special populations such as working with probation students, undecided students, or other at-risk student populations.

Physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions
Work is primarily sedentary. Sits comfortably to do the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, or lifting items weighing up to 15 pounds.
