Admissions Specialist (Temporary)


The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (GSPHHP) seeks to provide a collaborative and accessible environment for excellence in education, research, and service in public health, to promote and sustain healthier populations in NYC and around the world, and to shape policy and practice in public health for all. The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy invites applications for a Substitute Admissions Specialist (Higher Education Assistant). The Admissions Specialist reports directly to the Director of Student Services. The Admissions Specialist, primarily responsible for implementing student recruitment and admissions efforts for Masters and Doctoral programs in the CUNY School of Public Health (SPH).

This is a six-month appointment with the possibility of renewal for an additional six months.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assists with developing, implementing and monitoring a strategic plan, objectives, policies and procedures for recruitment and admissions;
  • Assists with analyzing external and internal barriers and opportunities for increasing the number, diversity and quality of applicants, enrollees, continuing students and graduates;
  • Identifying sources of qualified applicants (such as academic departments, prospective employers, alumni, and community and professional organizations) and developing them with ties to promote their involvement in recruitment;
  • Developing, updating, producing recruitment and admissions materials;
  • Serving as the administrative contact person for prospective and recognized applicants;
  • Representing the SPH at college visits, college fairs, and other recruitment related events. Conducting on-campus and virtual information sessions for prospective students;
  • Organizing administrative and logistical aspects of recruitment and admissions events, including room scheduling and reservation, materials, AV, food, staffing, and other related needs;
  • Coordinating, implementing, and maintaining all aspects of an online admissions application system;
  • Managing the application portal through SOPHAS and updating the CUNY SPH Admissions website;
  • Maintaining a tracking system for student inquiries, applicants and those admitted and enrolled;
  • Managing student recruitment and admissions related data in CUNYFirst (CUNY database);
  • May need to occasionally work nights and weekends;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required.


A preferred candidate should have:

  • Master's Degree in public health, higher educational administration, public administration or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of relevant work experience, such as in student admissions, recruitment, student affairs, academic higher education or a related field.
  • Knowledge of the public health field preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent planning, organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Detailed oriented.


Supervises activities in an operational unit supporting Admissions and/or Enrollment.

  • Oversees staff activities; plans and monitors employee scheduling and coverage and coordinates training
  • Serves as liaison to one or more departments providing student support services, such as Financial Aid
  • Coordinates selection process activities such as applications review, verification of information, and timely forwarding of data to other CUNY areas
  • Coordinates mailings and other communications
  • Monitors activity and reports on both transactions and outcomes
  • Completes projects to improve services and enhance productivity and cost-effectiveness
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
