Primary Purpose
The Associate Director of Admissions for International Recruitment is a twelve-month exempt (EHRA) position who assists in the recruitment of Appalachian State University’s future undergraduate students. This position is responsible for planning and assessing strategic recruitment and yield activities of international students by exercising and continually developing a strong understanding of general market characteristics and trends as well as those specific to Appalachian and international student recruitment. The Associate Director counsels prospective students and their families in their college search process and their transition from their home countries and institutions to Appalachian State by providing information and assistance about the admissions, financial aid and enrollment process, academic programs, campus visitation, housing, immigration, and the local area. This position also builds relationships with and serves as a primary contact for high school and independent counselors, agents and international education advisors. The Associate Director is an essential part of a constructive and collaborative recruitment team that shares the responsibility of meeting the University’s strategic enrollment goals and enrolling students that echo Appalachian’s strategic plan. Appalachian is particularly seeking candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and have a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from populations underrepresented at Appalachian State.

Services Provided
The Associate Director completes the primary responsibilities above by:

  • serving as a program manager collaborate with the Senior Associate Director of Diversity Initiatives to ensure a seamless integration of diversity recruitment initiatives of international and domestic students by planning, executing and assessing all recruitment operations (on campus, off campus, and online) necessary to meet recruitment and enrollment goals for international students and US citizens residing abroad
  • conducting institutional assessments and market research to inform international recruitment strategies
  • traveling internationally and domestically for international student recruitment
  • developing and managing publications, web content, social media, and communication campaigns for international recruitment
  • developing and strengthening ties with international high school counselors, EducationUSA advisors, educational agents, alumni and other key influencers in the recruitment process
  • conducting extensive outreach contribute to the University's diversity recruitment goals by recruiting international students both domestically and abroad and relationship and conversation-building activities (via in-person communication, phone, e-mail, written correspondence, and social media) with prospective students and their families throughout the recruitment funnel
  • submitting program management reports of recruitment and prospective student activity to the Senior Associate Director throughout the recruitment funnel
  • reviewing and assessing international student applications and supplemental materials and providing admission decision recommendations for applicants
  • serving as the international admissions liaison to all campus constituents necessary to assist prospective students in enrolling at Appalachian State University
  • assisting in graduate student recruitment as required
  • collaborating with the director of the Appalachian English Language Study (APPELS) Institute to recruit and retain students for a subsequent degree program
  • keeping up to date with trends in international admissions and recruitment through professional development opportunities and active participation in relevant organizations including, but not limited to, NAFSA, AACRAO, OACAC and Education USA
  • collaborating closely with the Office of International Education (OIED) from acceptance to orientation in order to ensure a successful transition to Appalachian
  • collaborate with OIED in utilizing current students in marketing and recruitment efforts

Minimum Qualifications

  • bachelor’s degree in international relations, global studies, student counseling, communications, education, business or public relations, marketing, or other related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • three years of experience in international student recruitment or related experiences working with international students
  • demonstrated success in working with diverse students and/or a greater consciousness of diversity
  • experience completing market research
  • knowledge of international education systems and keen awareness of best practices in international admissions
  • experience and ability to operate independently, exercising independent judgment and discretion and with little or no guidance, and to be able to make decisions on behalf of the Admissions Office and the university that are appropriate, timely, and defensible
  • ability to work as a member of a team with a flexible attitude
  • proven ability to build and cultivate relationships across nations
  • strong cross-cultural skills, maturity, and professionalism
  • willingness to work select evenings and weekends
  • strong oral presentation and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • master’s degree in international relations, global studies, student counseling, communications, education, business or public relations, marketing, or other related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • five years of experience in international student recruitment or related experiences working with international students
  • understanding of US student immigration regulations
  • established connections with organizations such as NAFSA, OACAC, and Education USA
  • ability to speak a second language and/or international living experience
  • effective, empathetic, and engaging communicator
  • appreciation of the administrative structure and chain of responsibilities within a university
  • thorough knowledge of a student centered/customer service oriented philosophy
  • ability to motivate others, strong commitment to quality service
  • strong computing skills and efficiency utilizing computing applications on various systems and programs (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, Banner, Google Apps, spreadsheets, etc.)
  • experience using various social media platforms
  • highly motivated to share a love of Appalachian
  • sense of humor
