When announced, the University of Virginia's most recently completed fundraising effort, the Knowledge is Power campaign, was the largest financial challenge in the history of higher education. As the University enters its third century and embarks on its next campaign, Gift Planning remains essential to reaching future fundraising goals that align with UVA's educational mission. As a cornerstone program of one of America's most distinguished fundraising organizations, Gift Planning is focused on generating new support by increasing visits with donors, engagement with alumni, and outreach efforts to parents, community members, and friends.
Reporting to the Director of Gift Planning in our central organization, University Advancement, the Associate Director of Gift Planning (ADGP) will join a team of five seasoned fundraising professionals and represent the University of Virginia, its programs, policies, personnel, traditions, philosophy and objectives to all constituent groups. The ADGP will cultivate relationships with individuals (alumni, family, and friends of the University) and actively solicit major, deferred, and future support gifts that benefit the entire UVA enterprise. He/she will partner with and offer guidance to gift officers in various schools and units across Grounds. Of the $3B+ raised in our last campaign, planned gifts accounted for about 25% of the total. The team is poised to make a significant contribution to our upcoming campaign!
In this position, you will prospect using our proprietary research tools and work with a dedicated advancement staff to develop your fundraising portfolio while executing sophisticated solicitation and closing strategies. You will expand your skills, knowledge and abilities as you have the opportunity to work with varied and complex planned gifts. The ideal candidate will be goal oriented and have a demonstrated track record in asking for and securing major gifts. Experience in planned giving is preferred and transferable experience as a financial planner, trust officer, or estate planning attorney will also be considered if the candidate has previous fundraising experience. He/she will possess exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with major gifts prospects, fundraising colleagues, academic leaders, faculty, alumni, and volunteers. The position requires the ability to travel on behalf of the University and occasional evening and weekend responsibilities. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or University is required. A Master's degree is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of charitable vehicles and fundamental use of charitable gift planning strategies.
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
Sensitivity to needs of benefactors.
Ability to travel on behalf of the University and occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.
Comfort in working in a decentralized environment.
Ability to work independently.
