The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a faculty wage position. This position will conduct animal experiments designed to test how breathing automaticity is maintained during sleep. These experiments are designed to help understand the mechanisms of sleep apnea in humans, a common problem that leads to poor health. The successful candidate will design and implement the physiological experiments, as well as analyze and graph the data and eventually contribute to their publication.
Candidates must have a PhD., MD or equivalent in Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Neuroscience or related disciplines, and two years postdoctoral training. Training in systems neuroscience and experience with neural control of cardiorespiratory physiology and sleep is required. Knowledge of neural control of breathing during sleep, chemo and other autonomic reflexes, are required. Experience with the following is also required: small animal surgery; single neuron recording; nerve MIU in anesthetized rodents; ability to measure sleep states and breathing parameters in conscious rodents; optogenetics; neurohistology.
