Professional Research Assistant


The Lifecourse Epidemiology of Adiposity and Diabetes (LEAD) Center of the Colorado School of Public Health has an opening for a full-time (1.0 FTE, 40 hr/wk) Professional Research Assistant (PRA) Recruiter position. This is a PRA with duties supporting the Healthy Start 2 (HS2) study.

Healthy Start 2 is an NIH-funded study that began in 2006 with the goal to establish and follow longitudinally a cohort of ethnically diverse children (4 months to 6 years old) and their mothers in order to explore how over-nutrition of the fetus in utero is associated with lifelong obesity, as well as metabolic and cardiovascular abnormalities in offspring.

The person in this position will be directly responsible for the recruitment, scheduling and retention of study participants for in-person visits that take place at the study clinic or at the subject's home. This PRA may assist other study staff in data collection at the visits, as well.

The regular work schedule for this position will be Mon - Fri 8am - 4:30pm. This position will also work some weekends and evenings, and occasional off-site travel is required. The regular weekday work schedule may be altered to accommodate weekends and evenings. The location of the LEAD Center is at the UCD Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO.

A candidate for this position will have education in biological sciences, health/medical research, public health or related field and/or experience in recruiting subjects for medical research.


This position will report to the Project Manager, Mercedes Martinez.


This is a position requiring an individual with an interest in clinical research and excellent communication skills by telephone and in-person. This PRA must also be self-directed and a have high degree of attention to detail. Duties and responsibilities include the following:
  • Contact and schedule study subjects for in-person visits using a variety of recruitment methods including telephone, mail, e-mails, social media and home recruitment.
  • Track success of scheduling attempts to assess effectiveness of recruitment strategies.
  • Telephone calls to confirm or reschedule study visits.
  • Participation in study retention efforts and events.
  • Assist study staff in data collection at visits.
  • Data entry of visit forms and resolution of data edits.
  • Participation in study meetings and trainings as required.
  • Other study projects as assigned.


This is a position requiring an individual with an interest in clinical research in children, knowledge of subject recruitment for research, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to be self-directed, and attention to detail. Work duties require the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Skill to create positive communication with participant families in order to recruit subjects for clinical research visits.
  • Ability to maintain communication with subjects for retention purposes.
  • Ability to collaborate with other study team members to assess effectiveness of recruitment strategies and innovate new approaches.
  • Ability to coordinate scheduling of multiple study procedures.
  • Data entry of visit forms and resolution of data edits.

  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in research or clinical setting working with human subjects/participants, specifically scheduling patients or participants.
  • Experience following a research or clinical protocol
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to allow travel off-site.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings.

  • Experience working with children and families.
  • Knowledge of health or nutrition, pregnancy obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes.
  • Proficiency in the MS Access database application.
  • Survey collection experience.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish speaking skills.
