Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science or related field. Five years of full-time experience identifying and pursuing opportunities that support business strategy and growth (such as start-up companies, entrepreneurial or investor partnerships, joint ventures involving start-ups or young companies; technology commercialization activities). Supervisory experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree or higher in business management or related field, or a Doctorate degree in Engineering, Science or related field. Experience leading or participating in one or more successful new venture. Additional years (6+) of full-time experience identifying and pursuing opportunities that support business strategy and growth (such as start-up companies, entrepreneurial or investor partnerships, joint ventures involving start-ups or young companies; technology commercialization activities). Experience with Intellectual property issues.


Brief Description of Duties:

The primary purpose of the position is to provide, under the general guidance of VP for Economic Development, administration and management of the Long Island High Technology Incubator and Calverton Business Incubator as well as leadership for Stony Brook’s incubation programs in collaboration with on-site management of AERTC and CEWIT in regard to the strategic development and growth of the programs themselves and, in collaboration with the leaders of VPED programs, to ensure access to University and off-campus resources, both existing and developed as new needs are identified, that will accelerate the successful development of start-up and fledgling innovation-based incubator companies.

The selected candidate will have experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.The incumbent will have both strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make effective decisions. The incumbent will have experience successfully building consensus among a large number of diverse colleagues, senior leadership and outside agencies to address and resolve issues and have the ability to accomplish major tasks and assignments with and through others. The incumbent will have outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail as well as the “big picture.”

Principal responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

Under the general guidance of VP for Economic Development, responsible for the rejuvenation and implementation of a strategic plan for Stony Brook Incubation Programs based on the existing VPED strategic plan and in collaboration with senior VPED officials including but not limited to those responsible for the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC) and the New York State Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), as well as the LIHTI Board of Directors, to include the establishment of benchmarks and goals and the development of policies and implementation of practices that accelerates the successful development of start-up and fledgling companies by providing entrepreneurs with an array of targeted resources and services, and that sustain Stony Brook incubation programs

Administration and management of the Long Island High Technology Incubator and Calverton Business Incubator and collaborate with onsite management of AERTC and CEWIT incubators and campus virtual incubation programs. Supervise Incubator Advocate as well as LIHTI and Calverton support staff and oversee the physical facility

Provide direct and programmatic support for incubator companies growth including but not limited to:

• Provision for management guidance, technical assistance and consulting tailored to young growing technology-based and knowledge-driven companies

• Assistance in obtaining financing for company growth (work with SBDC, Angel Network and venture groups as well as internal programs for obtaining public support including SBIRs and STTRs)

• Promoting innovation through networking with other incubators and economic development programs on Long Island

• Providing incubator companies with access to advice on intellectual property.

• Creating and offering venues for assistance in the process of matching researchers/entrepreneurs with mentors/investors.


Introduce and represent SB incubation programs to University faculty, develop student internship opportunities and foster the transfer of technology from the University and regional research laboratories to Incubator companies, and foster incubator companies' access to University economic development programs, such as CATs, SPIR, etc.

Under the general guidance of VP for Economic Development, act as advocate for causes that advance the goals of Stony Brook incubation programs and innovation and entrepreneurship on Long Island, and market incubator opportunities to entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, and other innovators.

Help to coordinate outreach to researchers and business owners as client candidates for SBU incubation programs.

Make periodic reports to VPED and LIHTI Board as appropriate
