The Spine Program within the Divisions of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network (UHN) is seeking an academic surgeon to lead and implement a vision for a comprehensive spine surgery program at UHN. We invite applications for this full-time academic position at the level of Associate Professor or higher by neurosurgeons or orthopaedic surgeons having clinical subspecialty expertise in spine surgery.

The successful applicant will also fulfill the mandate of a clinician-scientist, a clinician-investigator, or a clinician-educator. The position offers an extraordinary opportunity to work in a leading Neurosciences center and collaborate in excellent clinical and research programs at the Krembil Institute and in a multidisciplinary clinical environment emphasizing quality care, health outcomes, research and education. Duties will include patient care, teaching, trainee supervision and research. Time for research will be protected. Duties as Head of the Spine program would be to devise and implement a strategic vision for the Program that is focused on excellence in care, research and education.

The Division of Neurosurgery at the Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto, is one of the largest academic neurosurgical units in the world. Excellent facilities for clinical neuroscience supported by state-of-the-art clinical, ICU and experimental imaging facilities provide an environment conducive to leading-edge research. The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Toronto Western Hospital is Canada's leading Orthopaedic group with a major focus on arthritis related research including regenerative medicine, precision medicine and health systems research. The spine program is aligned with key programs at the UHN - specifically Toronto Rehabilitation Institute as a strong leading rehabilitation program and Princess Margaret Cancer Center as a top cancer program in North America.

Qualifications include an MD, specialist certification in neurosurgery or orthopedic surgery and eligibility for licensure in the province of Ontario. A postgraduate degree (MSc or PhD) in basic or clinical research, fellowship training in the specific subspecialty area and a track record of commitment to academic excellence as demonstrated by a portfolio of significant scholarly works are key considerations. Candidates must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Annual salary is anticipated to be in excess of $400,000. Estimate is based on fee for service billings. Additional salary support and start-up funding commensurate with the successful candidate's academic commitments will also be available.
