OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY As a member of the Duke Children#s Development leadership team, the Director of Duke Children#s Programs, will be responsible for the strategic development, implementation, success and evaluation of community engagement fundraising programs, development communications and donor stewardship. This position provides direction and sets strategy for community partners, signature events, Children's direct mail and communications. The director will contribute to and support the overarching strategy and direction of Duke Children#s by enhancing the donor pipeline and creating a gratifying gifting experience for donors, and will oversee the development of strategic messaging that enables and enhances all development efforts promoting Duke Children#s. The director develops key relationships with targeted audiences, including but not limited to donors, corporate sponsors, physicians, and patient families. The director will manage two exempt-level staff members, reports to the Senior Executive Director of Development for Duke Children's, and works collaboratively with colleagues in Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs, and works collegially throughout the Duke University community to maximize financial support of Duke Children's.

WORK PERFORMED

Strategic Direction (60%)
  • Provides strategic philanthropic direction on annual signature events, such as Gala, JVKK, Jump for the Children and Anna#s Angels.
  • This position will establish and implement comprehensive event metrics and advise on fundraising trends to ensure a data driven approach to our work.
  • The director will provide strategic advice on community partner and programs to increase philanthropy and community support and partnership.
  • This individual will foster partnerships with 3rd party fundraising events with the intent to position Duke Children's as a premier community philanthropic partner.
  • In partnership with DHDAA Annual Giving Service and Director, Annual Programs, develop strategies and messages for direct mail solicitations; determine annual calendar and frequency of mailings.
  • Implement strategies for new donor acquisition as well as donor renewal.
  • Create an effective pipeline of annual donors to provide a steady flow of prospects, donors and volunteers to higher levels of giving.
Management and Other Responsibilities (10%)
  • Manage two exempt level staff, including hiring, onboarding, training, and performance management.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Executive Director, determine program fundraising goals and expectations, align and manage staff resources accordingly.
  • Analyze donor giving results and trends. Make recommendations for appropriate gift strategies and follow-up.
  • Contribute to decisions relating to operations and budget prioritization. # Will foster a team focus.
Stewardship (15%)
  • Partner with Duke Children's staff to steward donors through specialized gift acknowledgements, gift clubs and incentives, annual donor wall updates, etc.
  • Coordinate cultivation/stewardship activities in collaboration with DHDAA Donor Relations.
  • Develop recognition opportunities for Duke Children's and other donor recognition mechanisms appropriate for size of gift. Manage appropriate approvals with DHDAA Donor Relations.
  • Work closely with major gift officers to develop stewardship plans for all donors of $50,000 and above, and coordinate with DHDAA Donor Relations.
  • Serve as liaison to Duke Health Donor Relations team.
Communications (10%)
  • Develop integrated strategy and messaging that supports efforts in all other areas (direct mail, Radiothon, donor relations, etc.).
  • Make recommendations for strategic partnerships that have media and marketing implications.
Alumni Relations (5%)
  • Collaborate with School of Medicine Alumni Programs and Development on programming for former house staff in Duke Children#s to increase giving, and identify pipeline prospects and potential board members.
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Work requires analytical, organizational, and communications skills generally acquired through a bachelor's degree program. Master's preferred.

EXPERIENCE
Work requires a minimum of six years' experience in a leadership role within fundraising or a related field in order to acquire the skills necessary to develop, administer, coordinate, and lead the above-mentioned fundraising programs and activities.
