Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited post-secondary institution is required. Highly qualified candidates with an associate's degree from accredited court reporting or broadcast captioning may be considered.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum 0-1 year of experience with a Bachelor's degree. Minimum 1 year of experience with an Associate's degree.
1. Able to write in realtime at an average minimum speed of 180+ WPM with at least a 95% accuracy rate across a variety of subject areas using standard court-reporting software.
2. Excellent grammar and proofreading skills.
3. Able to troubleshoot technical skills related to realtime captioning software and computer support independently.
4. Experience with transcript production software/hardware (including using a foot pedal) preferred, but will train.
5. Exceptional interpersonal skills, both person-to-person and written.
6. Uses effective time management skills to meet strict deadlines.
7. Able to work independently.
8. Customer service and quality driven.
9. Constant attention to accuracy and detail.
Preference given to candidates with the following experience:
- Professional or intern experience in captioning in a postsecondary setting for individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
- Working knowledge of broadcast captioning and technical standards regarding closed captioning production.
License or certificate:
Registered Professional Reporter (RPR), Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR), Registered Merit Reporter (CMR), Certified Realtime Captioner (CRC), Registered Diplomate Reporter (RDR) certifications strongly preferred.
The Media Captioning Transcriptionist produces transcripts for audiovisual and/or auditory-only media (e.g. online streaming clips, DVDs, VHS, podcasts, etc.) used in the classroom or for campus events. The Media Captioning Transcriptionist will work with a variety of media in terms of length and content.
While it is preferred for this person to work on-site at the McBurney Disability Resource Center office, this position also allows the ability to work from home if the employee is able to meet internal security requirements. The employee must provide their own equipment and have compatible internet speeds to work from home.
