Job Summary:

The Library Specialist position is responsible for cataloging, acquisitions, interlibrary loans, serials management, and course reserves in support of Sheridan College and its students, faculty, and staff. This position requires time covering the circulation desk and evening work. 

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Manage cataloging policies, procedures, training, and material processing to include OPAC management

Locate and maintain order information, place selected orders, and receive material

Oversee interlibrary loans via order, receipt, and supply and maintain statistics including copyright compliance with processing assistance delegated to part-time staff

Manage print serials and delegate processing to part-time staff and students

Manage course reserves, including copyright compliance

Assist library patrons in locating and using print and non-print resource, including regularly scheduled hours at the Circulation Desk

Assist students with basic computer tasks and utilization of library equipment

Assist with library projects

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required by the Position:


  • Common library practices and procedures
  • Familiarity with cataloging, MARC bibliographic records and AACR2 guidelines
  • Interlibrary loan practices
  • Serials management
  • Considerable experience with library systems and technology
  • Microsoft Word and Excel at intermediate level
  • Familiarity with Integrated Library Systems
  • Customer Service
  • Written and oral communication
  • Work independently
  • Work as an effective team member
  • Preferred knowledge:
    • SIRSI integrated library system
    • WYLD organization
    • Online research databases

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree required
  • Library experience preferred

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent interruptions
  • Ability to reach overhead
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds
  • Long periods of time working with computers
  • Evenings, weekend and summer work
  • Circulation desk coverage
