The Department of Human Services at Western Carolina University (WCU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor of our Parks and Recreation Management (PRM) program with an emphasis in Community Recreation and Youth Development beginning in August, 2017. The PRM program is highly regarded within the university and the region. Current emphasis is to grow the program enrollment in size while maintaining its reputation for producing well-qualified graduates. WCU is a regional comprehensive university located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. One of 16 institutions of the University of North Carolina, WCU enrolls over 10,000 students to include over 1800 graduate students.

The Department of Human Services, which resides in the College of Education and Allied Professions, houses seven graduate and three undergraduate programs. The institution has adopted the Boyer model of scholarship as a means of supporting its commitment to the stewards of place model and integrated learning. As such, faculty are expected to utilize the scholarship of engagement to enhance student learning. Faculty members participate in regional engagement and support the University’s DegreePlus Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The PRM program seeks a highly qualified individual who will play an integral role in continued development of programs and initiatives in the major. Applicants must possess an earned Doctorate in Recreation, Leisure, Youth Development or a closely related discipline and should demonstrate excellence in teaching, a record of service, work experience in community recreation setting and evidence of a scholarly research agenda. Minimum Training & Experience Requirements:

Applicants must possess an earned Doctorate in Recreation, Leisure, Youth Development or a closely related discipline and should demonstrate excellence in teaching, a record of service and evidence of a scholarly research agenda. Candidates who are ABD will be considered. The candidate will teach general courses in the undergraduate major and specific courses in the community recreation focus area including but not limited to: Leadership and Group Dynamics, Program Planning and Evaluation, Management and Administration, Foundations of Parks and Recreation, Active Recreation and Leisure, Recreation Research and Camp Organization and Administration. The candidate will support general program responsibilities including undergraduate advising, university and community service and internship supervision during the fall, spring and summer sessions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates who have confirmation of an earned doctorate in Recreation, Leisure, Youth Development or a closely related discipline prior to start date. Preference also is given to applicants with previous teaching in higher education and community recreation and youth development experience. Expertise in one or more of the program’s focus areas: parks and protected areas, health and wellness, outdoor leadership, community recreation, commercial recreation. Preferred candidates will also present evidence of networking expertise for partnering with local, state and national agencies and their professional organizations and a demonstrated research agenda. Preferred candidates should be a Certified Park and Recreation Professional CPRP through the National Recreation and Park Association.
