Context of the Job:

Under limited supervision, the Costume Design Assistant assists the Costume Director of the Resident Ensemble Players (REP) in the day-to-day management of the Costume Shop. S/he assists resident and guest costume designers with the organization and paperwork necessary to complete the design.

Major Responsibilities:

* Updates and monitors costume production budgets including collecting and turning in receipts.

* Maintains inventory of costume stock supplies and orders necessary supplies.

* Analyzes costume renderings and pulls from stock for Costume Designer's consideration.

* Accompanies and assists Costume Designer on costume and fabric shopping.

* Shops and sources costumes for Designer approval. Makes approved purchases.

* Purchases shoes and fits on actors.

* Researches rental possibilities, documents and tracks rentals, and manages restoration of
garments and their return.

* Manages and responds to all rehearsal notes regarding costumes.

* Creates design piece list including garments, crafts, wigs, footwear, and millenary.

* Packs each show for transport to theater, making sure all items are accounted for.

* Collects all costume notes from dress rehearsals including those from the Designer, the
Costume Director, the First Hand, and the Wardrobe Supervisor, and assigns to costume shop
for completion.

* Acts for Costume director in his/her absence.

* Performs other related duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree with three years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Degree in Technical Theater or Theatrical Design preferred.

  • Knowledge of costume history and design, costume construction and fabrics.

  • Strong sewing skills and with ability to operate domestic and industrial sewing machines.

  • Proficient computing skills, including Excel and Google Docs.

  • Excellent internet search skills.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Excellent time management, budgetary, communication, and supervisory skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

Special requirements:
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings when required.
