Duties: The Journal of the History of Ideas is a major scholarly journal in the humanities, published quarterly. The JHI has a team of four Executive Editors; it also has an independent Board of Directors and Board of Editors. The JHI's office is at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Managing Editor works as a Penn staff member. The Managing Editor reports to the Executive Editors. Additional staff includes one part-time Assistant Editor, who is normally a senior doctoral student in a relevant discipline. JHI uses ScholarOne to manage online the submission and peer review process as well as copyediting and more.

The Managing Editor coordinates all phases of the production of the journal, delegating some tasks to be performed regularly by the Assistant Editor as approved by the Executive Editors.

Management of manuscripts: Oversee communications with authors of submitted manuscripts and all phases of the peer review process.

Copyediting and Proofreading: serve as primary copy editor for accepted manuscripts; coordinate and oversee final copy editing, proofreading, and copyright.

Production and communication with University of Pennsylvania Press: set and maintain the annual calendar for production of each issue, including delivery of each issue, in coordination with University of Pennsylvania Press. Maintain regular communication with Press.

Monthly Editorial Meetings: prepare reports and agendas for monthly editorial meetings; take minutes and post; follow up on decisions.

General Communication: staff the office regularly and respond promptly to queries from authors, board members, and others by phone and email.

Finances and bills: coordinate financial payments and communications; maintain orderly financial records.

Annual meeting: organize and coordinate planning and arrangements for the annual meeting of the Board of Directors and Board of Editors, including reserving the hotel block, meals as directed, reserving meeting and speaker space, publicizing the annual Lovejoy Lecture, catering, and any other tasks necessary to the meeting. Managing Editor also prepares and distributes meeting reports, and attends the meeting

Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required; MA preferred. Foreign language training helpful.

Interest in working with scholars; careful attention to detail; excellent editorial and writing skills; ability to communicate clearly and collegially
