The Office of the Vice President for Research at Florida State University seeks to fill the position of Assistant Vice President for Research Administration and Finance.


Reporting to the University Vice President for Research (VPR), the Assistant Vice President (AVP) provides primary support to the VPR in the strategic planning and development of activities pertaining to University research programs. The AVP is charged with overseeing the research budget, preparation of research statistical reports, and managing other administrative and fiscal matters involving the Office of Research and the functional areas of the Division of Research.
The primary responsibilities include: Assist and advise the VPR in formulating, developing, and implementing goals and objectives and University policies and procedures pertaining to the Division of Research. Has direct responsibility for overseeing all projects/budgets established in the Sponsored Research fund groups and for managing the research budgets including the annual SRAD budget, reconciliation, SRAD distributions and all VPR financial commitments Responsible for providing research statistical reports to federal and State governmental agencies, BOG, and university units, as required Reviews and approves, at the Dean and/or VPR level, various transactions/documents initiated by the reporting units within the Division of Research (i.e., proposals, grants/contracts, IP, HR, fiscal, etc.).
Has direct supervisory responsibility for Sponsored Research Administration (SRA). Ensures that SRA facilitates faculty research while monitoring project activity for compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Oversees the administrative functional areas within the Office of Research including HR and accounting. Represents the Office of Research by serving on university committees in areas of responsibility and at State and National meetings.


Master's degree and six years of experience in public administration, business administration, finance, accounting or other area of similar specialization, or a Bachelor's degree and eight years of experience in the same as stated. Note: Additional education may substitute for experience.
Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate self and others.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to anticipate future outcomes of proposed actions and recommend changes as required.
Experience in personnel management to include hiring, supervising, and counseling employees.
Experience providing leadership and direction in programmatic, budgetary, and operational functions.
Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook or equivalent software.
Organizational skills to set goals, prioritize assignments, monitor performance, and exceed set deadlines.
Strong oral and written communication skills with experience creating and delivering presentations to small and large diverse groups.
Ability to develop innovative approaches, techniques and procedures to provide more efficient services.
Ability to demonstrate critical thinking based upon in-depth data, substantiating information, considering and respecting others’ input personal values, and ethics
Ability to strategically plan and serve as a catalyst for organizational change, cultivate a shared vision with others, and motivate others to transfer vision into action
Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities at the same time.
Ability to work a flexible schedule to include some travel.
