Position Summary

A communications manager in the Michigan State University Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics (AFRE) will be a member of one of the leading applied economics departments in the U.S. This is an exciting opportunity to tell the story of a department that is ranked No. 4 in the world in the global ranking of agricultural and applied economics departments, and has 41 tenure system faculty, 54 fixed term faculty, 70 graduate students, and 745 undergraduate students (with three majors in Agribusiness Management, Food Industry Management, Environmental Economics and Management).


Faculty and staff in AFRE address societal policy questions and solve practical problems for producers, consumers, and the environment.  Our undergraduate and graduate programs prepare the next generation of economists and managers to meet the needs of the food, agricultural, and natural resource system in Michigan and around the world. The department maintains a large international program and major external grant funding.


The Communications Manager I, writes and edits materials on applied economics and management to produce content for a variety of audiences. An ideal candidate will have a strong emphasis on digital communications using web, content management systems and social media platforms.


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, English, Communications, Public Relations/Marketing or related Liberal Arts program; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in writing and editing news releases, feature articles, and other communications content from research papers and reports for both print and digital media; knowledge of word processing, desktop publishing, database, spreadsheet and presentation software; proficiency in website and social media strategic platform communication; experience in taking complex, economic research information and composing or editing stories and/or news releases in a way that makes them accessible to various audiences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Desired Qualifications

Background in the social sciences and/or agriculture and natural resources is desired; a self-starter with an outgoing personality that will represent the team in apositive manner; a team player who can work independently as well as in a fast-paced team environment, make sound decisions and prioritize tasks effectively; attention to detail; excellent interpersonal skills; knowledge of Constant Contact, Microsoft Office, Photoshop and InDesign; basic photography and graphic design skills are a plus.
