Position Summary

The successful applicant will be responsible for coordinating operational activities, as assigned, in the Process Development Group of the MSU Bioeconomy Institute's Lansing-based corporate services. This position involves, but is not limited to: performs fermentation set-up, monitors, samples, cleans and other operational duties in support of the MSU Bioeconomy Institute’s corporate services; performs specific fermentation and/or purification operations in order to maintain quality control and meet deadlines; prepares special and periodic operational reports; maintains unit records, including batch records and testing results; data entry and analyses in Microsoft Excel to facilitate information sharing with clients and customers; maintains health and safety standards in order to ensure compliance with University, State and Federal rules and regulations; assists with developing and implementing policies and procedures; forecasts needs and orders supplies in order to maintain inventory levels.

 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired from specialized training such as that acquired in two to three years of college, technical, vocational, trade or business school with coursework in a field related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in performing tasks related to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. May require certification in the area of employment.

 

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline (e.g. Microbiology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline); experience working in a laboratory; excellent mechanical aptitude and trouble shooting skills; hands-on experience with fermentation; experience with sterile technique; organizational skills and strong attention to detail; excellent written and oral communication skills; proficiency with computers, especially with MS Excel; ability to work effectively and respectfully in and across teams.

Duties associated with this position involve lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, and pushing/pulling.

Duties associated with this position involve work in noisy (at or above 85 decibels) areas, and risks that have been identified by Environmental Heath and Safety, such as exposure to phenols and acids.
