The Citadel invites nominations and applications for the position of Traubert Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics. Candidates must have an earned doctorate and be committed to promoting teaching and scholarship among students and faculty at a predominantly undergraduate institution. Located in historic Charleston, a city known for its unique charm, The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, is a residential, public senior military college dedicated to excellence in the education of principled future leaders. About a third of our cadets enter military service after graduation, while the majority of cadets leverage their distinctive education for a civilian career. In its evening programs, The Citadel functions as a regional university that offers graduate and undergraduate degrees focused on serving the local community. The School of Science and Mathematics offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in Biology; Computer Science; Health, Exercise, and Sport Science; and Mathematics; and undergraduate degrees in Chemistry (ACS-accredited), Nursing, and Physics. There are approximately 400 undergraduate and 65 graduate students in these programs. The School currently employs 46 faculty members actively engaged in teaching, research, and service. The School’s budget is supplemented through the efforts of the Citadel Foundation, which provides significant funding for scholarships and faculty research. Working closely with the Citadel Foundation, the successful candidate will facilitate the School’s fundraising and development efforts and will strengthen its internal and external relationships. The dean will lead the administration of the School, including strategic long-term planning; financial management; and the development of curriculum, faculty, staff, and students. The dean must effectively promote and support collaborations across The Citadel to foster excellence in teaching, quality research, and professional development in a student-centered environment. Minimum qualifications:
An earned doctorate in any of the disciplines included in the School. Established evidence of distinguished teaching, research, and scholarly work appropriate to qualify as a tenured, full professor. A commitment to promoting excellence and diversity in the recruitment, retention, and development of students, faculty, and staff. A proven record for fundraising in higher education to support program development; enterprising new revenue sources; improving facilities and resources; and/or development opportunities for students, staff, and faculty. A history of effective administrative experience in higher education. Strong interpersonal communication and decision-making skills. A commitment to shared governance and to the values of educational excellence and meaningful service consistent with The Citadel’s mission and core values.
