University of North Texas Health Science Center - Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:* Responsible for participating in the execution of the strategic plans of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of North Texas Health Science Center as they may pertain to emergency medicine as an academic enterprise.* Responsible for recommending academic policies and procedures to the dean. The chair ensures compliance with various institutional policies and evaluates faculty performance as it relates to the delivery of the emergency medicine curriculum.* Cooperates with the dean for the development and administration of the department bylaws. * Works with departmental faculty to develop short and long-range goals that are consistent with the overall goals of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and other academic units of the health science center. * Prepares goals and objectives upon which departmental activities are based.* Anticipates the resource needs of the department, communicates those needs to the dean, and monitors the judicious use of the resources that are subsequently provided to the department. * Responsible for development, implementation, evaluation and improvement of all teaching programs of the department as assigned by the associate and assistant deans.* Assures the course goals and objectives are in accord with those established for the college. * Participates in student assessment and facilitates participation of departmental faculty in interprofessional teaching programs when requested.* Provides council to the dean and associate deans for the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and procedures that are supportive of research. This includes providing the faculty with opportunities and assistance in securing extramural research support, and identifying the facilities and time in which to conduct the research.* Expected to promote collaborative research projects among the faculty and with researchers in other departments and other institutions.* Works cooperatively with the dean and associate deans in the recruitment of new faculty.* Identifies the qualities and characteristics that are needed to carry out the departmental mission including those personal attributes that promote synergies and operational effectiveness within the department and the health science center. * Develops the professional potential of the department faculty so individual and organizational goals can be achieved.* Assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the faculty and works in cooperation with the dean and associate deans to provide both general and focused training for faculty.* Periodically evaluates faculty performance with regard to the goals and objectives of the academic programs, the college, and the health science center.* Identifies faculty accomplishments and brings these accomplishments to the attention of peers and appropriate individuals or groups in the institution. * Facilitates active participation of departmental faculty on UNTHSC-FW committees and new student interviews as those needs may arise. * Is the academic leader of the department. The chair's ability in this role should be demonstrated by example, whenever possible. The chair should exemplify the same interest, activity, and high-standards of teaching, scholarly activity, research, and service which is expected of faculty.* Participation in the educational programs of the HSC as an instructor of population health and other assigned areas, and as a member of the TCOM Academy of Medical Educators.* Participation in the HSC's IPE/P Program as a member of the Curriculum Committee of that program. * Developing clinical partnerships for the HSC professional programs including the TCU/HSC School of Medicine in cooperation with and under the direction of the Deans and the Provost.
