Saint Mary’s College of California, one of the oldest and most distinguished universities in the West, seeks an accomplished and forward-looking academic leader to serve as its next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Serving approximately 4000 students, Saint Mary’s College is a Catholic, liberal arts, residential university that has been owned and administered by the De La Salle Christian Brothers for 150 years. Inspired by the Lasallian tradition and charisma, Saint Mary’s is recognized for its rigorous liberal arts education, promoting critical thinking, shared inquiry and social justice; the high quality of its academic programs; and its award-winning, internationally recognized faculty and students. Renowned for the beauty of its campus, Saint Mary’s College is located in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area in Moraga, California, a suburban community about 10 miles east of Berkeley and 20 miles east of San Francisco.

Saint Mary’s academic departments and programs, which encompass 222 faculty members, are organized around four distinct schools: the School of Economics and Business Administration, the School of Science, the Kalmanovitz School of Education, and the School of Liberal Arts. The degree programs at Saint Mary’s are a rich blend of traditional undergraduate, graduate and professional, and degree completion programs. All focus on the world beyond the student and recognize that wisdom is both timeless, as reflected in the curriculum, and iterative, growing in and through shared inquiry. These programs advance social justice in ways central to Catholic social thought, and they intensify the impact of the Saint Mary’s College experience by taking an immersion approach to learning and requiring focus, commitment, and personal responsibility.

The next Provost of Saint Mary’s College will favor a team approach, working with colleagues in a spirit of partnership, commitment to the mission, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. The successful candidate will be a confident, innovative leader with a track record of achievement as an educator and scholar, including substantial experience managing and allocating resources in alignment with strategic priorities. The new Provost will bring an understanding of and respect for shared governance and a commitment to an open and transparent collaborative environment that encourages teamwork, inclusive decision-making, and a sense of community.

To provide the leadership required in this position, the Provost must be an accomplished and forward‐thinking academic leader, ideally Catholic, who is able to lead the College with knowledge, commitment, and insight in its unique Catholic, Lasallian, and Liberal Arts mission. The Provost must have demonstrated leadership in advancing academic excellence and distinction in both student and faculty populations, an understanding of larger university functions, including educational technology, library and academic resources, student life, and enrollment management, as well as an understanding of the complexities of Catholic higher education. A demonstrated commitment to diversity and a clear record of success in building inclusive community are required. Also expected are superior skills in oral and written communication and empathic listening. Finally, the ideal candidate will be a creative, reflective, and risk-taking leader whose decision-making is informed by experience, data, and consultation.
