Director of Foundation Relations (1704)
The Director of Foundation Relations leads the Institute's efforts to develop and implement a strategy for securing funding from private foundations, both for projects that align with the Institute's strategic priorities, and for faculty-initiated projects.
The Director is expected to exercise initiative and independent judgement in doing this work, even as she or he functions as part of a cohesive team in the Provost's office.
- Prepares an annual plan to build relationships with, and secure funding from, foundations on behalf of the Institute and its faculty. This work relies on:
- A clear understanding of the Institute's strategic priorities;
- A sophisticated understanding of the work being done across Pratt's schools and departments on behalf of the institution, and of faculty and staff-initiated projects;
- A commitment to developing and sustaining a diverse and inclusive community;
- Strategies for approaches to foundations, especially their program staff;
- Knowledge of the over-arching foundation landscape, of funding priorities and practices at individual foundations, and of their relevance for the Institute
- Works closely and collaboratively with the Department of Institutional Advancement, in order to ensure alignment with Pratt's comprehensive development strategy;
- Researches foundation funding prospects, with the aim of identifying opportunities for Institute support;
- Develops and sustains relationships with foundation representatives, with the aim of being able to generate and follow up on funding opportunities;
- Develops and sustains relationships with Pratt faculty and staff, with the aim of understanding the range of work at the Institute, where support is needed, and how best to match needs with funding opportunities;
- Works with Pratt administrators and faculty-and with foundation representatives-on developing projects for grant proposal submission;
- Prepares and submits proposals-including project narratives, budgets and supporting materials-to appropriate foundations, ensuring that proposals represent Pratt, its faculty and its staff as strongly as possible, even as they also meet the criteria articulated by the funder;
- Prepares and submits written interim and final reports on all grant activities to ensure that the Institute has been responsible in disbursement of funds according to the grant's criteria and that the activities undertaken have met each foundation's accountability criteria;
- Prepares and maintains a database of prospects, funding sources, and proposals submitted;
- Upholds Pratt's commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in seeking funding opportunities from diverse financing sources;
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree or higher preferred
Experience: The strongest candidates will have three to five years' related experience, ideally in higher education, and will have a history of obtaining foundation funding.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent research skills, ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, ability to formulate and work with budgets, and skill in the use of office technologies, including word processing, spreadsheets and database use.
- Must be a proven initiator with demonstrated strong organizational, planning and interpersonal skills. Must be able to produce / manage multiple projects under deadline pressures and with keen attention to detail. Must demonstrate inter-cultural competence with an understanding of the importance of diversity in higher education.
