The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications and nominations for the position of Director, McKinley Health Center. McKinley is a fast-paced ambulatory facility providing high-quality healthcare and health education to students, and medical expertise to the University's Urbana-Champaign campus.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions created by the Morrill Act in 1862. It is located in east-central Illinois, about 140 miles south of Chicago, 125 miles west of Indianapolis, and 180 miles northeast of St. Louis. It is the flagship campus of the University of Illinois system, and a founding member of the Big Ten Conference. The University offers more than 150 undergraduate and 100 graduate and professional programs in over 15 academic units, and has nearly 33,000 undergraduate students and just over 11,000 graduate students, hailing from all 50 states and 111 countries. In 2015, the University announced its expansion to include an engineering-based medical school, which would be the first new college created in Urbana-Champaign in over 60 years.

McKinley Health Center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and provides services to the undergraduate and graduate student bodies of the University of Illinois. The Health Center is funded by a mandatory student fee assessed each semester. This fee enables most services to be covered without additional cost to the student.

Student visits to McKinley exceed 100,000 per year. The clinic has between 300-350 appointments per day and is staffed by approximately 190 employees. The medical staff consists of roughly 25 physicians, 10 nurse practitioners/physician assistants, 25 registered nurses, 5 licensed practical nurses, 4 mental health professionals and 9 medical assistants.

McKinley promotes a primary care model of services. Students, upon admission to the University, are assigned a provider which they are encouraged to see when medical concerns arise. Students may schedule an appointment by calling McKinley or scheduling online at McKinley's website. The clinic's Dial-A-Nurse service also offers assistance with scheduling appointments, as well as offers 24/7 medical advice.

McKinley has on-site laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy services. In-house support consists of Medical Records, Information Technology, Building Services and the Business Office. McKinley has an operating budget of approximately $21 million. There are a total of six medical clinics within McKinley, including the Mental Health Clinic, the Immunization and Travel Clinic, and the Women's Health Clinic. There is also a Health Education Department that provides such services as stress and weight management, sexual health education, nutrition counseling, athletic training and physical therapy.

The Director is responsible for the programs and operations of the McKinley Health Center and the Student Health Insurance program to ensure that professional services are available to promote the health and welfare of students. This individual will report directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Director of Auxiliary Services, and has seven direct reports.

Duties and responsibilities of the Director include, but are not limited to:

  1. Oversees the Student Health Insurance program and health care delivery to University of Illinois students, demonstrating sensitivity to the unique health concerns of a diverse population of students.
  2. Promotes a team approach to patient care through integration of the services of physicians, advance practice providers, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, health educators and a full-service medical laboratory, radiology department and pharmacy.
  3. Provides energetic, creative, and strategic leadership to ensure that health care delivery is high quality, affordable, and responsive to student needs and preferences.
  4. Provides effective human resource management including involving staff in creating a progressive strategy and vision for student healthcare, implementing goals, and reviewing outcomes.
  5. Prepares and submits annual operating budget and ensures cost-effective control of expenditures.
  6. Seeks input of students for the continuous improvement of healthcare access, quality and types of services via the McKinley Advisory Board and other forums.
  7. Provides leadership necessary to address conditions which may be detrimental to health, as well as promote and maintain the practices, attitudes, and perspectives of good health.
  8. Provides professional consultative services to campus administration pertaining to health issues on campus and acts as the campus Public Health Official.
  9. Supports academic units by conducting medical evaluations regarding academic/medical withdrawals and regarding student contractual agreements.
  10. Functions as a liaison with the local medical community, public health services, local hospitals, the University College of Medicine, the University College of Nursing and other nationwide health center directors.
  11. Enforces pertinent sections of the student code that are designated to the Health Center Director and sections that pertain to health.
  12. Responsible and accountable to support and ensure a culture of inclusion, safety, quality and risk management including ethical compliance.
  13. Participates in campus infectious disease workgroup activities.
  14. Participates in oversight of University sports medicine.
  15. Provides leadership planning for health related disasters and may be called upon to manage health related crises.
  16. Assumes appropriate additional duties and responsibilities to further the mission of the unit as may be assigned.

Qualifications include:

  1. MD or DO with Board Certification in Family Practice, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics, required.
  2. Three to five years of upper-level administrative experience in comparable environment, required.
  3. Respect for and understanding of college-age students' lifestyles, diversity and a preventive-education approach to healthcare delivery, required.
  4. Demonstrated effective and successful fiscal acumen, human resources management, communication and interpersonal skills, required.
  5. Experience in health insurance management, preferred.

This is a full-time (100%), benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month basis. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A starting date of August 1, 2017 is preferred.
