This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

The salary range for this classification is: $3,858 - $5,485 monthly.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate is required to complete a background check prior to assuming this position.

Department: University Advisement Center
The University Advisement Center (UAC) provides academic advising to matriculated and returning undergraduate students in the areas of general education, overall graduation requirements, academic probation and disqualification, and university policies and procedures. The UAC is the primary advising home for undeclared students and provides special advising services regarding E.O. 665, 1037, 1038, and 1100. The UAC works in partnership with appropriate campus resources to provide comprehensive referrals essential to student persistence, retention, and matriculation towards timely degree completion.
Under general supervision of the Associate Vice President, Retention and Academic Advising, the incumbent provides academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures, and graduation requirements to the lower division, undergraduate, college specific student population by utilizing an advanced, developmental, problem solving approach, rather than a prescriptive application, to support students in retention, closing the achievement gap, and degree completion. Conducts ongoing reviews of retention data within each specific cohort to identify common trends and errors resulting in failure to progress, and provides intrusive, solution-centered recommendations to decrease the rate of occurrence.
Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
Required Experience: Possession of this knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A masters degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Preferred Experience: Experience in a CSU Academic Advisement Center.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Basic principles of individual and group behaviors;
-Research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, and interpreting information;
-Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing;
-Familiarity with organizational structures and personnel issues.
-Work with a variety of professional staff, faculty, and students to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions;
-Carry out day-to-day assignment without immediate directions.
-Independently plan work, take action, and assist students in solving problems.
-Use advanced statistics and research methods to collect, record, and interpret data as it relates to the UAC, advising, and the CSUDH student population;
-Use judgment within the area of their expertise to creatively utilize existing procedures and to recommend solutions to problems for which precedents may not exist;
-Design, establish, and sustain new programs or initiatives.
-Using a personal computer to develop and maintain files.
-Utilizing PeopleSoft information systems to evaluate student success and/or roadblocks.
-Utilizing computer based and interview information to accurately advise students.
-Utilizing advising contracts and petitions;
-Analyzing and addressing complex academic needs of students.
-Working with a culturally diverse student population as well as awareness of the needs of under-represented, non-traditional, and other student groups.
Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of classroom presentation experience with fairly large groups of young adults;
- Ability in training others;
- Excellent critical thinking skills, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities are time sensitive in January, May, June, August and December each year.
70% - Works in support of, and under the supervision of the Director, University Advisement Center and the college Associate Dean in the design and implementation of a strategic retention program to facilitate graduation.
- Advises a college-based pre-major caseload of students, provides significant and frequent advising opportunities, makes decisions in individual cases to resolve student problems within established parameters, regulations and guidelines, tracking each student cohort thereafter to ensure efficient degree completion.
- Collaborates with UAC advisors and faculty to plan, organize, and coordinate college based interactive workshops specifically designed to support freshmen and sophomore cohorts.
- Following each semester, post-probation, the incumbent will review individual or group challenges, present this information by compiling retention data, prepare reports for collaborative review, and will act as the spokesperson within the positions area. The outcomes will be shared with the Associate Dean and the Director, University Advisement Center by the incumbent, and programmatic changes will be implemented as determined.
- Administers evaluations to each student to ensure Student Advising Learning Objectives are achieved.
- Under the direction of the Director, University Advisement Center and the college Associate Dean, the incumbent will implement evidenced based, best practice interventions to promote student personal, professional and academic success.
- Collaborates closely with the College Specialist to address identified student challenges, using a preventative approach in documenting and solving problems impacting retention.
- Maintains a daily database of students supported, challenges experienced, and overall outcomes.
15% - In collaboration with the College Specialist, presents information to the Associate Dean and the Director, University Advisement Center weekly.
10% - Collaborates as a team member in the delivery of all New Student Orientation, Transfer Student advising, student retention initiatives, and academic success workshops. Supports students in pursuing their educational goals by providing information related to student aptitudes, interests, and abilities.
5%Other duties as assigned.
