Position: Public Safety Officers (Security Officers)

Reports to: Director of Public Safety

Status:  Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Full benefits

General Description:

Under the supervision and direction of the Director of Public Safety, officers are required to be prepared to work a flexible full time schedule and able to adapt to schedule changes if needed.  Officers are responsible for patrolling campus property to protect life and property, to prevent crime, to maintain order, to enforce university policies and constitutional mandates, to conduct investigations, to perform public service tasks.

Specific Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Analyze situations quickly and clearly and adopt an effective course of action in hazardous circumstances in order of priority.
  • Read, comprehend, explain and apply complex issues of law derived from code books, computer screens or other media devices.
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely during duty rounds and on assigned tasks.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with citizens, university officials and staff.
  • Understand and operate various safety systems on campus, such as fire alarms, video surveillance and door monitoring, in order to understand the warning, provide direction and to reset the system.
  • Write clear and comprehensive incident reports.
  • Identify university problems and offer suggestions to solve the problems.
  • Utilize basic computer systems to accomplish tasks.
  • Investigate and report unusual conditions.
  • Provide first aid or assistance to injured parties.
  • Adheres to the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Code of Ethics.
  • Provide protection of life, property, public order and constitutional rights to all campus constituents.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures, student code of conduct, criminal law, investigation techniques, crime prevention methods, and knowledge of juvenile law.
  • Must have the ability to read, understand, explain, and implement technical material consisting of laws, policies, regulations, guidelines and orders.
  • Willingness to work a full time flexible schedule and able to adapt to schedule changes if needed.
  • Ability to analyze and prioritize situations and adopt effective courses of action while giving due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
  • Willingness to work under strict discipline and with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the co-workers, supervisors, the university community, visitors and non-university agencies.
  • Ability to write clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Knowledge of constitutional rights.
  • Ability to identify law/rule violations and to take the appropriate action.
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be First Aid and CPR certified.
  • Must have a valid California Guard Card License (needed by first day of employment).
  • Preferred CA BSIS Baton Permit and OC Spray Certificate of Training (not required).
  • Preferred Use of Handcuffs Certificate of Training (not required).
