Basic Function:

Do you possess excellent writing and communication skills; and are you intrigued by the idea of uncovering potential donors for fundraising efforts? WPI is seeking an enthusiastic and inquisitive individual for the role of Prospect Research Analyst. This position reports to the Director of Prospect Management and Research and is a valued member of the Advancement team. The Analyst is responsible for identifying, profiling, and determining the giving capacity of potential donors. The Research Analyst also assists with prospect management efforts, which includes identifying new donors using data analysis as well as working with gift officers to help them move their prospects through the gift cycle.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identifies, profiles and rates prospects for major gifts, endowed gifts, special project funding and annual support.
  • Reports new prospect research findings to biographical records staff for the purpose of maintaining and updating the Salesforce alumni database and other alumni files.
  • Helps support the prospect management efforts of the team by helping to prioritize prospects using data analysis as well as strategies to help move prospects through the pipeline.
  • Researches and gathers internal and external data to help identify and prioritize major donors for prospect pools.
  • Identifies and delivers value-added information to front-line development staff on their assigned prospects, including monitoring news and publicly available financial information from SEC filings, press releases and major newspapers.
  • Generates new and updated biographical profiles on major prospects for the President and Vice President of Development using print and on-line reference sources.
  • Remains informed of central issues in the development profession, maintain professional standards of research and conduct work in a manner that is ethical and sensitive to the needs of donors, development staff members and WPI.
  • Attends prospect research webinars and online research product enhancement training presented by Salesforce, Lexis/Nexis, IWave, and others as needed.
  • Attends professional prospect research education and training sessions sponsored by NEDRA (New England Development Research Association) and or APRA International (Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement) at least once yearly to stay current on prospect research methods and resources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to use data found in research to create clear and concise written research documents; paying attention to accuracy, detail, and relevance of the information.
  • Knowledge and experience working with a relational database; experience with Salesforce a plus.
  • Experience with on-line databases such LexisNexis, Form 990s and SEC Documents. Experience with iWave and Hoovers is a plus.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel functions such as pivot tables and multiple-level sorting and filtering
  • Excellent organizational skills that demonstrate the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and prioritize those requests to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with all Advancement staff and colleagues across campus.
  • Ability and willingness to work independently or as a team member.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a willingness to take on new projects and acquire new skills.
