Facilities and Services at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for a Management Engineer. This position will be part of the system and controls group in Utilities and Energy Services. This group is responsible for maintaining reliable and effective temperature control and DDC systems for UIUC campus.

The position will provide technical expertise and direction to the System and Controls Crafts and Trade shops. Responsible for assisting in the management and ongoing development and implementation of the maintenance and project work flow for the group. Responsible for the development and management of the System and Controls projects, budgets and prioritization of shop resources.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

1. Supervise and manage the daily functions of the System and Controls shops.
  • Meet weekly with System and Controls shop foreman/sub-foreman to discuss the work management flow.
  • Meet or exceed KPI metric goals for shops.
  • Manage shops jurisdictional work assignments.
  • Incorporate the Energy Management Control Center into the shops daily work function.
  • Evaluate and determine staffing needs for the shops and reallocate resources according to campus needs.
  • Benefit approval, FMLA, yearly evaluations, disciplinary actions, and other related HR activities.
  • Grievances within the System and Controls shops.
  • Assist in developing the System/Controls shops' yearly budget and responsible for monitoring and adhering to it.
  • Provide estimates or fixed cost bids for System and Controls shops' project requests.
  • Manage the System and Controls shops' projects to meet budget and schedule.
  • Provide engineering control design documents for System and Controls internal projects.
  • Coordinate shops' resources with other Facilities and Services shops and contractors to meet project delivery schedules.
  • Review Construction Services project submittals and shop drawings.

  • 2. Provide Technical support for System and Controls shops.
  • Provide engineering support and technical advice for maintenance work and personnel within the shops.
  • Monitor shops' work to assure compliance with prevailing codes and the University Building Standards.
  • Create, provide and enforce safety procedures and policies for the shops' work environment and personnel.
  • Perform job safety analysis, and near-miss reports on safety infractions within the shops.
  • Provide recommendations and feedback to the control standard committee and the energy management control center for deficiency found within the shops' work flow.
  • Identify repeat work order issues and correct or have a plan in place to resolve the root cause.

  • 3. Other related duties or projects as assigned by the Associate Director of Utilities and Energy Services - EMS.


    Required: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

    Required Experience and Knowledge:
    1. Minimum of 5 years continuous working experience in the field of engineering.
    2. Minimum 5 years of working experience with crafts and trades personnel, with 2 years of that time in a University environment.
    3. Experience in the Siemens and Schneider Electric I/A BAS control systems.
    4. 5 years of experience in HVAC systems design and troubleshooting.
    5. Microsoft Office 2013 Suite knowledge
    6. Microsoft Project
    7. AutoCAD
    8. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications

    Preferred Experience and Knowledge Requirements:
    1. Experience in work management systems. Specifically Asset Works AiM software.
    2. Experience in managing crafts and trades work functions.
    3. Experience in maintaining work management KPI and goals.
    4. Demonstrated managerial skills to direct, supervise, and oversee engineering projects both large and small. Familiarity with and ability to function in a unionized, Civil Service environment is preferred.
    5. Demonstrated leadership traits, through previous assignments, that include the desire to lead, vision with aggressive goals, concern and respect for the individual, integrity, credibility/dependability, accountability, loyalty and a willingness to work in a team environment
