The Director is responsible for the development and administration of comprehensive recreational and fitness programs primarily serving MSU Denver students. The Director is responsible for budget management and fiscal oversight of the department, program marketing and communications, oversight of a facility and operations, risk management, ongoing assessment of program efficacy and impact, staff supervision, and related duties.

The hiring salary range is $71,719 – $82,474. The final salary offered will be commensurate with education and experience of the finalist candidate.

Duties/Responsibilities

As part of Student Engagement and Wellness at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver), the Director of Campus Recreation is responsible for leading Campus Recreation at Auraria (CRA), a comprehensive recreation, fitness and wellness program.

The Director oversees a comprehensive program, including but not limited to the following program areas: Fitness programs that adaptive fitness (providing access to recreation and fitness programs to individuals with disabilities), group fitness, personal training, and multiple drop-in fitness spaces; Recreational sports programs that include informal, intramurals, and collaborative support for club sports (Managed by Intercollegiate Athletics); an outdoor pursuits program that includes annual trips, an indoor climbing wall, wilderness leadership and training program, and an outdoor adventure center; and special event coordination. Student learning and support is at the forefront of all departmental programs.

The Director will collaborate regularly with relevant academic departments to ensure that student learning in Campus Recreation programs complements the curricular opportunities. Facilities-related collaborations are also ongoing and key responsibilities of the Director.

The Director is responsible for ensuring that departmental programs are accessible and utilized by students that mirror the University’s diverse student population. As such, the Director engages the department in intentional work to understand which students utilize services and to address any identified inequities.

The Director is responsible for ensuring that all programs adhere to safety standards and for the overall risk management of all departmental programs and facilities.

The Director is responsible for overseeing program assessment and strategic planning, in support of the University’s strategic plan and mission.

The Director must be responsive to trends in the field of recreational services, higher education, and technology to support relevant services.

Other duties include space and equipment analysis (capital improvements), management and purchasing of major equipment, facility scheduling and van rentals. As such, the Director is involved in contract negotiation with a variety of campus and community vendors.

The Director is responsible for multiple campus recreation accounts, budget allocations, budget reporting, and revenue-generating activities. In addition, the Director is responsible for overseeing and collaborating with Human Resources specific to personnel management and policy adherence.

As a leader within Student Engagement and Wellness and Academic and Student Affairs, the Director will serve on committees and task forces to support student success.

Campus Recreation is a highly collaborative department. Accordingly, the Director must cultivate and maintain excellent working relationships across the University, the campus, and within the broader Denver-metro community. In particular, the Director will work in tandem with faculty in the Human Performance and Sport (HPS) department, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, all Student Engagement & Wellness Departments and other Academic and Student Affairs departments, and with recreation and/or wellness professionals to ensure that relevant collaborative opportunities and/or efficiencies are realized.



Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Sport/Recreation Management, Physical Education, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.

At least five years of experience leading or managing a recreation/fitness/sport program.

At least four years experience supervising professional staff in a related setting (recreation or higher education).

Experience working in a higher education recreation program.

Budget management experience.
Experience identifying, managing, and mitigating risk in recreation programs.

Excellent written communication skills (The application materials and the writing prompt will be evaluated for clarity, grammar, and effectiveness).



Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups and willingness to engage in professional development activities to improve understanding and effectiveness of working with culturally different populations and individuals with diverse social identities.

Capital planning/improvement project experience (i.e. experience with feasibility, program design or master planning projects and or oversight of construction design).

Experience marketing recreation or related programs.

Experience managing customer relation management (CRM) or recreation management software applications.

Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.
