Essential functions of this position:
This Research Technician level fellow position is supported by a research fellowship granted by IKA Works aiming the development and refinement of IKA photobiorectors specifically designed for the mass cultivation of sensitive microalgae (mostly dinoflagellates). Duties include conduct direct research as well as assist in routine laboratory activities in the Algal Resources Collection, such as processing routine equipment required for the cultivation of different algal species, isolation and establishment into stable culture of new isolates from natural, perform research duties such as conducting growth experiments, harvesting algal biomass for analysis, using cultivation methods from small tube cultures to large mass cultures (10+ Liters), entering data related to culture sources and background and assist in the writing and proof reading of data reports, scientific manuscripts and web site literature.

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Laboratory experience in microorganism culturing and sterilization techniques
Applicants should be comfortable working with machinery and scientific equipment such as microscopes and be physically able to handle heavy objects up to 50 pounds
Preferred education, professional skills and experience:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning (University or College) plus at least one year of technical training in a phytoplankton laboratory or demonstrable experience in microbiological techniques
Notions of microalgae taxonomy and culturing although not mandatory is desirable
Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position:
A valid driver’s license valid for the State of North Carolina is required
Recruitment Range: $28,343 to $31,492
NC Salary Grade Equivalency: 55
Hours Per Week: 1.0 (40 hours per week)
Months Per Year: 12 Months
Work Days: Monday - Friday, occasional OT/weekends
Work Hours: 8:00AM - 5:00PM
