The Prairie Research Institute (PRI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is centrally located between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. Primary Position Function/Summary: Work directly with manufacturing and industrial entities throughout Illinois to provide technical assistance in identifying opportunities and implementing solutions to improve efficiency associated with materials, processes, water and wastewater, and energy utilization.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: Work with businesses, municipalities, and state and federal agencies to promote the implementation of sustainable practices, affecting their triple bottom-line (people, planet, profit). Identify and secure clients to engage to provide technical assistance services to within the Illinois businesses, government, and not-for-profit complex, including ISTC's current network of clients, consultants, vendors, local/state/federal agencies, and private environmental and/or sustainability organizations. Conduct on-site pollution prevention assessments independently and in conjunction with representatives from ISTC and partner agencies. Identify material optimization, water conservation, energy efficiency and waste minimization opportunities within client facilities. Develop business cases for implementation of sustainable practices. Assist clients with facilitation and implementation of ISTC-recommended opportunities. Participate in pilot scale projects for innovative processes in the area of industrial and municipal solid waste reuse, reduction, recycling and waste to energy methods. Collect, process, and analyze data from these activities for the purposes of identifying suitable technologies for introduction to U of I organizations and Illinois companies. Collaborate with U of I and industry to transfer the technology and knowledge to other clients and the research industry. Make technical presentations to clients and at professional events/conferences regarding ISTC services and/or research results. Prepare and disseminate technical reports and publications to be published in professional journals, newsletters, peer-reviewed journals, etc. Collect, compile and report environmental outcomes and project outputs. Contribute to project reports for funding sponsors. Work jointly with a number of varied constituencies while observing standards of professional conduct. Must be willing and able to travel intermittently. Contribute to the overall mission of the Center.

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education: Required: Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, economics, environmental or related discipline. Alternate degree fields will be accepted/considered based upon the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Preferred:

Experience: Required: A minimum of 1-2 years of applicable experience working in business or industrial environment. Educational internships may be considered as professional experience. Preferred: Experience in helping develop projects that lead to contracts. Experience in understanding, identifying, and satisfying customer needs.

Training, Licenses or Certifications: Required: Must possess a valid driver's license and access to transportation. Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the state of Illinois.

Knowledge Requirements: Required: Familiarity with Illinois businesses and industries. Must be motivated and eager to learn new skills, particularly about manufacturing and industrial systems particularly related to sustainability, energy efficiency, and process improvement with partners, clients and customers under difficult and demanding situations. Must possess awareness of the impact of current and potential regulations on industrial processes. Must have basic knowledge of safe work practices. Effective communication, technical writing, organizational, personal relations, teamwork, and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to work in a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of limited resources and multiple and changing priorities, under minimal supervision and as a self-starter. Possess an attention to detail. Excellent computer and data management skills, including knowledge of current software. Preferred: Demonstrated knowledge of industrial processes and process economics.
