Rowan University is a public comprehensive state-designated research institution with approximately 16,000 students. Reporting to the Director of Enterprise System Administration, the Infrastructure Database Administrator will be a critical member of the team responsible for designing, implementing and operationalizing the core database services infrastructure supporting all major units of the University.

In coordination with the Enterprise Storage and System Administration teams, the Infrastructure

Database Services team is responsible for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, and Oracle Middleware infrastructure, supporting a variety of client managed applications including mission critical ERP, Clinical, Data Warehouse, and Development systems.

General Responsibilities

● Perform as a core member of the enterprise database team, primarily supporting MSSQL and Oracle infrastructure

● Design, implement and maintain:

● Microsoft SQL Server Infrastructure

● Oracle Relational Database Management System (RDBMS), Real Application Clusters

(RAC), WebLogic Fusion Middleware (FMW) and related infrastructure

● Oracle Internet Directory (OID)

● Oracle Advanced Security, Audit Vault and Database Firewall

● Vendor and third-party provided application stack components (Java, Tomcat, Apache, etc.)

● Act as technical project manager for major database infrastructure initiatives, changes and deployments

● Provide client application teams with subject matter expert guidance and support for database related issues, integration and development initiatives

● Create and maintain system documentation, diagrams, operational procedures, and architectural database documentation

● Propose, design, and coordinate implementation of enhancements that will improve the performance, security, and reliability of database systems and services in accordance with industry best practices

● Coordinate with storage, network, virtualization and system administration teams in support of the configuration, management and maintenance of the storage, physical and virtual data center environments supporting the database infrastructure

● Provide reports and metrics as needed to support requirements analysis and growth planning

● Assist both highly technical and non-technical client offices in database platform related efforts

● Design, implement and test Disaster Avoidance and Recovery plans relating to database services infrastructure

● Participate in the organization’s change management process

● Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) troubleshooting for high-visibility and/or high-impact problems relating to database infrastructure

● Other duties as assigned


● Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.

Professional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

● 2+ years’ experience managing SQL Server and/or Oracle in an Enterprise Environment

● Knowledge of database architecture and principles

● Knowledge of SQL Server or Oracle

● Experience designing and implementing enterprise relational database services

● Working knowledge of networking, enterprise storage environments, enterprise server environments, and server virtualization

● Understanding of industry best practices surrounding proper maintenance and support of a 24x7 mission critical relational database infrastructure

● Ability to think independently, analyze and solve complex problems, and to quickly grasp technical issues and offer solutions

● Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

● Strong ability and desire to learn new and emerging tools and technologies

● Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Preferred Technical Skills

● 3+ years of experience managing SQL Server and/or Oracle in an enterprise environment, including design, implementation, and operational experience

● Advanced SQL, PL/SQL, Python, Unix shell (bash/ksh/perl), and Windows PowerShell scripting

● Experience in software development or programming

● Experience planning and executing enterprise-wide database infrastructure initiatives

● Demonstrated advanced analytical skills to identify issue root-cause and maintaining service availability

● Familiarity with ITIL and Information Security concepts and best practices

● Expertise that includes: Visio, SolarWinds, VMware ESXi, HP 3Par storage arrays, CentOS/RedHat/Oracle Linux, Windows 2008 and 2012, Active Directory, HP DL and BL servers, Web Service APIs, REST architectures

● Experience providing Subject Matter Expert troubleshooting for high-visibility and/or high-impact problems within the enterprise

● Certifications may include MCSA, MCSE, Oracle DBA Certified Professional/Master/Expert
