Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Center for Career and Professional Development at Lamar University works to connect students with employers. By providing services related to career exploration and skills enhancements, students gain the confidence and knowledge to succeed in their professional endeavors. The department markets to and connects employers with students and alumni to support the transition from college to career.

JOB SUMMARY:
Serve as the primary Career Consultant for students/alumni of the College of Fine Arts and Communications, as well as serve as the liaison for student groups and organizations. Provides individual career guidance to best assist students in career exploration, opportunities for experiential learning and to set career goals. Utilize career assessments as a resources to assist in exploration with students. Plan and administer career development workshops and seminars to guide students from selection of an academic major through the job search or application to graduate or professional schools. This position also supports students and alumni in attaining their career and professional goals by providing services to include resume critiques, mock interviews and various workshops. The position has direct reporting responsibility to the director.

DUTIES:
Career Development/Consultation: Provide students and alumni individual assistance in defining career options, developing employment skills and job search procedures.
  • Plan and execute numerous campus-wide career development seminars, workshops and classroom sessions to educate students on the need for and steps in the career planning process
  • Cooperate with the Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) in assisting currently undeclared students identify the most appropriate academic major(s) and/or minor(s)
  • Administer and interpret individual interests, skills, abilities and values assessment instruments
  • Assess individual career development needs, providing students the skills necessary to understand the ramifications of their career decisions and actions
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of industry trends related to student populations serving and their potential career outlooks
  • Utilize the HireACardinal database to monitor, track students' progress, in addition to maintaining familiarity to assist students in setting up their respective profiles and navigation

    College Relations: Coordinate college specific outreach, programming and customized seminars/workshops/programs based on student needs and faculty requests. Work with and advise faculty/college administrators to expand departmental participation (promotion of events).

    Additional Responsibilities:
  • Participation in events/programs requiring evenings and weekends
  • Professional development activities, including involvement in state, regional and national associations
  • Represent the university and department at specified regional professional association conferences and professional development workshops
  • Participation in staff activities, including events, workshops and programs
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the director to ensure the success of the Center for Career and Professional Development on behalf of the university, its students and alumni

    Minimum Qualifications:
    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel, Human Resource Management, Communications, Business or related discipline required. Degree(s) must be from a regionally accredited institution. At least two years of experience counseling/advising students with diverse backgrounds and a variety of career or post-graduation goals. Experience with college recruiting, from a higher education or a business perspective is preferred. Willingness to participate in all aspects of the Center and a commitment to educating students within a Student Affairs environment are essential.

    Demonstrate an understanding of job search techniques which include resume development/interviewing and employer networking. Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills, able to develop and give group presentations. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of MS Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Publisher, Photo Shop, PowerPoint); publishing software; email; and Internet browser. Some travel is required, as needed. Experience with Handshake is preferred.
