Math Lecturer


The Mathematics Department at Medgar Evers College, CUNY invites applications for a Lecturer position in Mathematics. We seek a dynamic candidate with a strong background in mathematics with expertise in the teaching of developmental mathematics who is interested in contributing to the development of a nationally relevant program in mathematics focused on diversity and equity.

The responsibilities of the position will include teaching undergraduate courses in mathematics, advising undergraduate students, working closely with our Developmental and Immersion Programs, active engagement in the community outreach initiatives of the Department, and other duties as assigned by the Department.

Named for the famed civil rights activist Medgar Wiley Evers, Medgar Evers College is a senior college of the City University of New York. The College is located in the vibrant Crown Heights section of Central Brooklyn. The college currently enrolls almost seven thousand undergraduate students. Of these, approximately three thousand are in the School of Science, Health and Technology, which offers B.S. degree programs in Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics and Nursing, as well an AS program in science and AAS and PN Programs in Nursing. The College and the Mathematics Department are committed to building and sustaining a culturally diverse faculty, staff, and student body. The Department of Mathematics is located in a new state-of-the-art School of Science, Health and

Technology building which is equipped with smart classrooms, research modules and six computer Labs, two of which are dedicated to the teaching of mathematics. Our philosophy is to support our Majors and all students through our tutorial program, colloquia, a vibrant math club and Undergraduate research and community outreach initiatives.

The faculty in the department teach and conduct research in various areas of pure and applied mathematics, including algebra, geometry, representation theory, fluid dynamics, differential equations, number theory and topology, and on the teaching of mathematics. Members of the faculty also participate in seminars at the Graduate Center, the PhD granting campus of the City University of New York.


Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field by September 01, 2017.
  • A strong commitment to inclusive excellence and demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated experience or potential in teaching, research, and securing external funding are preferred.
  • A promising record of scholarship, teaching and community engagement. I.e., demonstrated success in undergraduate teaching, excellent communication skills and evidence of the ability to involve undergraduate students in research.

The preferred candidate will have, in addition, an established or emerging interest in college access and preparation in mathematics, innovative instructional technologies, development and support of community partnerships, faculty professional development, and matters related to the retention and persistence in mathematics for students of color and students living in poverty. I.e., the successful candidate should have a strong interest in connecting mathematics education across P-20 settings and in working with community stakeholders.
