About The Unit: The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact (, the most ambitious and comprehensive campaign in the University's history, will raise $5 billion to support faculty and researchers, practitioners and patients, and students and programs across the University. Launched in October 2014, the campaign supports priorities in every division, school, department, and institute, and aims to engage 125,000 alumni and friends over its five-year duration. Within the University-wide Inquiry and Impact Campaign, the College aims to raise $600M to support the educational goals of its undergraduates, including support for financial aid, teaching and research, career development, housing, athletics, and international study. Boyer and to the Vice President of Alumni Relations and Development, College Development advances philanthropic partnerships with key alumni, parents and friends of the College to support these goals. Unit Job Summary: Director, Major Gifts - Financial Aid - The College: Plan and implement strategies for a coordinated program of fundraising activities for the College, specifically focused on a comprehensive plan to enhance fundraising for financial aid both expendable and endowed. Identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors who have the capacity to make financial commitments of $100,000+ to the College's Odyssey Scholarship Program, a comprehensive system of support for students with financial need. Manage a portfolio of approximately 60-75 prospects. Plan and execute a target of 75 prospect visits per year. Plan and execute 24+ $100k+ solicitations per year. Collaborate with senior leadership to design and implement a plan to meet University goals for the Odyssey Scholarship Program and related financial aid challenges. Develop a multi-year plan to achieve fundraising benchmarks and coordinate implementation of that plan with colleagues. Serve as content expert and internal leader on the Odyssey program and related financial aid strategies. Train staff to represent Odyssey to prospective donors. Play a consultative role in helping other University colleagues plan and execute prospect strategies. Provide staff support to University leaders, including trustee volunteers, in the solicitation of prospects. Coordinate with Alumni Relations and Development (ARD) communications office to plan and implement communications and marketing strategies for the Odyssey Scholarship Program. Establish tracking systems to monitor progress against fundraising goals, coordinate tracking and produce progress reports as required. Coordinate with Donor Relations to ensure appropriate stewardship of donors to the Odyssey Scholarship program and all other Odyssey related recognition elements. Recruit, manage and staff volunteers as needed. Develop and maintain relationships with donors, volunteer leadership, faculty and administrators to advance efforts with individual pool and on behalf of the Odyssey Scholarship Program. Qualify new prospects. Determine creative cultivation and solicitation strategies. Arrange for prospects to meet with appropriate University staff and faculty. Plan and execute Odyssey cultivation events in conjunction with event planning staff. Maintain strong communication links with various College and University colleagues to ensure a coordinated approach to prospects and donors. Deliver timely and effective follow-up in various forms to prospects and donors, which would include generating customized Odyssey-specific fundraising proposals. Generate timely contact reports in prospect database following prospect and donor visits. Serve as key partner for stewardship of major gift donors to Odyssey. May hire, train and manage staff. Perform other duties as assigned. Unit Education: Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree preferred.

Unit Experience: A minimum of five years in fundraising, development, alumni relations, donor relations, nonprofit management, research, marketing, communications, sales or similar professional work experience required. A minimum of three years of leading a project team or managing staff required. A minimum of two years of experience working closely and collaboratively with senior leadership, trustees and board members required. A minimum of one year of experience developing and monitoring budgets required. Proven record of accomplishment in solicitations and cultivation of prospective donors, or sales and client development required.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Applicants must be currently authorized to work permanently in the United States. A current resident of the Chicago area or willing to relocate to the Chicago area required. Valid United States driver's license required. Ability to participate personally in high-level gift strategies and solicitations required. Ability to identify stakeholders and build strong collaborative relationships with them across departments and units of a large, multi-faceted University required. Demonstrated success in building relationships with high capacity prospects and donors required. Knowledge of and commitment to best practices for higher education development required. An entrepreneurial spirit that embraces creativity and innovation required. A strategic thinker who understands both the large picture and the steps necessary to reach personal, departmental and University-wide goals required. Strong analytical, verbal and writing skills, high attention to detail and follow-up, and excellent organizational skills required. Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and tact required. Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University's Donor Relationship Management System), Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access required. Strong leadership qualities, including the ability both to delegate and to execute, thereby leading by word and by example required. Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a team setting required. An exceptional work ethic and track record of personal initiative required. Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills characterized by the ability to listen, to speak and to write well required. Flexibility and adaptability to new programs in an emerging and changing environment required. Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business required. Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends required. Dress code of business or business casual attire required. Understanding of the University of Chicago, its history, organization and modus operandi preferred.
