POSITION DESCRIPTION: Provide leadership and strategic vision for a well-established, accredited design program that successfully integrates architectural studies and interior design. Lead departmental mission to inspire the next generation of human-centered designers to use innovative, emerging technologies and design for social and environmental well-being. The successful candidate will perform duties of department chairs as described in the University of Missouri CRR. Applicants from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
RESPONSIBILITES: Represent the needs and the aspirations of the department, and be the principal executive officer of the department with responsibilities to include financial, personnel, instructional, and student relations; lead the interior design program accreditation; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; student advising and mentorship; conduct, publish, and disseminate research; develop and maintain productive relationships with industry partners and external stakeholders and foster long-term relationships; engage in entrepreneurial and advancement activities to secure funding for departmental growth and goal attainment; lead and provide vision for state and regional specialists in MU Extension Housing and Environmental Design; Serve on college and university committees.
DEPARTMENTAL/GENERAL INFORMATION: The Department is one of the six programs in the College of Human Environmental Sciences at the University of Missouri. The Department has an Interior Design program rated #13 by DesignIntelligence (2016-2017). The department serves 160 undergraduate and over 30 graduate students. The Department's online graduate program received the 2017 IDEC Institutional Merit Award for the progressive online graduate education. Both MS and PhD programs currently have two emphases in (1) Environment and Behavior and (2) Design with Digital Media. Additional focus on sustainability is currently being developed. The Department also houses the Great Plains ADA Center, which carries out a $5 million grant funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The University of Missouri is the flagship campus of the University of Missouri system with membership in the Association of American Universities. The Columbia campus is a land-grant, state-supported, multi-purpose university of approximately 35,425 students offering a wide variety of academic, cultural, and athletic activities. Columbia, Missouri is a regional center for health care and financial services surrounded by a large rural population. Recognized for its high quality of life in national media, Columbia is a community of approximately 108,000 with a wide-range of activities and opportunities. It is located in central Missouri, approximately two-hours from either St. Louis or Kansas City.
Required: Earned doctorate with a minimum of one professional degree in interior design, architecture, or related design field; teaching effectiveness and research excellence; ability to lead an accredited design program.
Preferred: National reputation and leadership in relevant professional organizations; NCIDQ certification; Evidence of community engagement experience.
