The Department of Special Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a collaborative professional for the position of Visiting Data Specialist. This position will develop GIS maps for Illinois Early Childhood Asset Map (IECAM) publications and materials, both print and online, as well as for data requests for customized maps; as well as prepare, process, and clean incoming data. This is a full time (100%), non-tenured, twelve-month, Academic Professional position. This position may become permanent (non-visiting) at a later date.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Works in collaboration with Project Data Manager in tasks related to:
  • Fulfill data requests from stakeholders
  • Data cleaning: reformat and edit the original/source data into suitable formats for further processes using various spreadsheet, statistical, or map software to produce the desired data elements
  • Data checking: verify estimates produced are true and correct, and its underlying process is valid and free from error
  • Data preparation for test, development, and public sites: perform due diligence on the data and its metadata (information and documentation about the data) for public viewing in the online database and interactive map
  • Develop GIS maps for reports and resources


Assist the PI/Director in developing materials and reports:
  • Customized maps
  • Customized data charts and tables


Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education:

Required: Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban and regional planning, in geography, in demographic, in sociology, library science, or in related fields.

Preferred: Master's degree in civil engineering, urban and regional planning in geography, in demographic, in sociology, library science, or in related fields.

Experience:

Required: Experience with GIS and ESRI software.

Knowledge:

Required: Familiarity with the web sites of Census and other federal and state agencies; familiarity with Excel and Access

Preferred: Possess skills in major statistical software, such as Stata, SPSS. Possess good numerical skills and the limitations associated with data; Possess organizational skills
