Duties: We are seeking to hire a research specialist in the laboratory of Dr. Jay Gottfried at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This position will involve performing human olfactory neuroimaging research, to include (but not limited to) the following technical activities: designing and optimizing olfactory behavioral studies; collecting and analyzing behavioral data; operating functional MRI (fMRI) scanner and acquiring fMRI data; conducting image pre-processing and image co-registration of fMRI scans; conducting analysis, modeling, and statistical testing of fMRI data including univariate and/or multivariate pattern approaches; operating EEG system and acquiring EEG data; conducting time-series analysis, modeling, and statistical testing of EEG data; preparing, titrating, and diluting organic volatile odor chemicals; carrying out the set-up, operation, and troubleshooting of olfactometer (smell delivery machine) equipment; carrying out the set-up, operation, and troubleshooting of physiological recording equipment; and creating computer models, graphs, reports and summaries for use in publications, professional journals, society abstracts, and grant applications. Administrative activities will include establishing and optimizing protocols and coordinating the conduct of multiple complex experiments; maintaining detailed records of results; recruiting, consenting, and scheduling human subject volunteers; completing IRB applications, revisions, and renewals; creating and maintaining lab manuals regarding operating, safety, and other procedures; obtaining sales quotes for lab equipment and supplies; completing portions of grant applications and/or documents associated with current local, state, and federal regulatory guidelines; performing scientific literature searches in support of research; and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Psychology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field, with 0 to 1 year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired. Competencies in many of the following stated skills is highly preferred: human cognitive neuroscience (sensory psychophysics; perception and behavior); functional MRI (data acquisition, physiological monitoring; data pre-processing and analysis); surface EEG and/or intracranial EEG (data acquisition, physiological monitoring; data pre-processing and time-series analysis); and advanced software analysis training and experience with Matlab, Python, R, SPM, AFNI, EEGlab, LIBSVM, Labview, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Arduino, SPSS, or related software and programming tools. Specific experience with odor stimuli is useful but not necessary. We are looking for an individual with excellent analytical skills and organizational skills, with an attention to detail, and with an ability to work independently and facilitate open and effective communication, cooperation, and teamwork.
