Required Qualification (as evidenced by an attached resume):
A Ph.D in physics, electric engineering or a related field of electric energy technology. Five years of combined professional experience in research, management and entrepreneurship activities, to include three years of experience following attainment of a doctoral degree. Experience in entrepreneurial activities related to the electric energy technology. A strong record and working knowledge of intellectual property and technology transfer.
Additional years (6+) of professional experience in research, management and entrepreneurship activities. Working knowledge and experience in the energy research communities at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Knowledge and hands-on experience with industrial use of federal facilities located at Brookhaven National Laboratory: National Synchrotron Light Source II (e.g. X-ray diffraction, reflectivity, micro-beam imaging), Center for Functional Nanomaterials (both analytical and synthesis equipment, such as advanced microscopy and thin film fabrication), and the Tandem Accelerator Facility. Knowledge and hands-on experience on computer modeling tools (e.g. C++, LabView, Matlab, Mathematica, Autocad and COMSOL) and electronics characterization tools (e/g. power RF electronics, preamplifiers: current, charge, PCB layout and SPICE-based circuit modeling). Experience with patentability analysis, patents, and patent life management. Record of licensed inventions in the energy field. Experience in developing successful federally funded (SBIR, ARPA-E, DOE etc.) and state (NYSERDA) industrial proposals related to large-scale energy generation (including conventional and superconducting electricity generation machines), electrical transmission (including conventional and superconducting transmission and distribution), in-grid electrical storage (including battery, supercapacitor, superconducting magnetic etc.) systems. Experience with securing private funding, especially funding of energy-related start-up businesses, basic knowledge of corporate finance and corporate taxation. Experience with initiating and maintaining industrial projects at Brookhaven National Laboratory, such as cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA). Knowledge of the local technology start-up environment, record of joint ventures with local energy start-ups.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Senior Research Scientist and Deputy Director will report to the Director of CIEES and will be responsible for scientific and technological program development of the current and future CIEES research projects as well as day-to-day operations of the center. The role of Deputy Director will also include interactions with the Stony Brook University Faculty and researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory in order to secure industry-driven projects aimed at expansion of energy-related industry on Long Island and New York State. Successful incumbent will have excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills with solid attention to detail and a team player with strong communication skills and an entrepreneurial spirit.
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a part time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
