About the Position

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic works independently as a skilled generalist and performs at a journey level in one trade with strong skills in other trades to perform a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction and renovation work on facilities and systems, particularly in mechanical facilities equipment and systems including HVAC and plumbing systems, to ensure a clean, safe and attractive learning environment. The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance system to ensure the preventive maintenance program objectives are met. The incumbent provides safety instructions and directions to unskilled or semi-skilled assistants.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

-Performs at a journey level in at least one trade and assists with basic and advanced level maintenance and minor repair work for various trades including HVAC/Controls, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and lock.

-Performs various types of preventive maintenance and routine maintenance work to include: motors, pumps, fans, controls, duct work, drains, meter readings, condensate sampling, filters repairs, and general cleaning.

-Uses hand and power tools for the completion of various types of preventive maintenance and maintenance related repairs.

-Works with other trade workers and shops, as needed, for completion of repairs and maintenance work.

-Maintains clean work areas, tools, and equipment.

-Inspects various types of equipment, systems, and areas to identify problems and needed repairs.

-Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.

-Read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches; and estimate cost, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work.

-Disables and clearly identifies (lock out and tag out) unsafe equipment, and immediately notifies appropriate personnel.

-Reports problems and needed repairs to be documented and scheduled.

-Records work details in log sheets, and keeps time records to assists in completion of documentation.

-Use computerized maintenance management programs and building automation systems.

-Operates radio or cellular phone for communication of urgent needs, critical information and status updates.

-Operates state vehicle and equipment to include; utility cart, scissor lift, boom-lift and forklift (as certified) to be used for maintenance, delivery of supplies, tools and equipment to job site.

-Responds promptly to urgent calls in order to prevent catastrophic equipment failure, injury, damage or further incident.

-Attends and participates in departmental meetings, training sessions and functions.

-Uses personal protective equipment as required for safety.

-Maintains records and retrieves data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.

-Prepares standard reports, to include as-built for database update. Keeps time records to assist in completion of documentation.

-Responds to Emergency Service Calls during both normal and after hours
