Announcement is hereby made for a 12-month tenure-track Counselor position beginning the fall 2017 semester on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood.   Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.

 This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.

Job Description:

The counselor (12-month) reports to the Director of Admissions/Assistant Dean of Student Services. The counselor will provide counseling services in the Office of Admissions, and also may assist in other areas when needed.  Specific responsibilities include the following:

  Disseminate information pertaining to the enrollment process, including college programs and services, enrollment procedures, admissions criteria, specific curriculum requirements, and the financial aid application process to prospective students, school counselors, and community agencies. Meet with prospective students individually and in groups to deliver Admissions information.

•Provide student development services, as well as career, academic, and admissions counseling to prospective, new and continuing students.

•Assist the Director in coordinating admissions and recruitment strategies to attract prospective students.

•Initiate, coordinate and execute recruitment activities at local high schools, college and community fairs, college nights, community agencies, and other venues as identified, including evening, early morning and weekend events.

•Coordinate and assist in on-campus recruitment activities.

•Coordinate and assist with follow-up activities including telephone calls, specialized mailings, e-mail, and information appointments as well as collaborate with other campus offices (e.g. Financial Aid, Counseling, faculty and Registrar) to ensure a consistent enrollment process.

•Review applications to determine qualification for admission for new students and for continuing students applying to restricted curricula; process accordingly and make referrals as needed.

•Coordinate the follow-up and tracking of students’ progress throughout the admissions and enrollment process.

•Develop and present programs and workshops to large audiences consisting of high schools, parents, community constituents and college/campus groups.

•Manage the collection, analysis, and reporting of admissions and enrollment management data.

•Provide academic advising and interpretation of placement test results.

•Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Admissions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 Minimum Qualifications: 

Master’s Degree in Counseling, Student Personnel, Social Work or a related field required.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills and computer literacy are required.  A minimum of two years’ experience working directly with students in a higher education setting is required. Experience in college admissions and recruitment is strongly preferred. Bilingual Spanish speaking strongly preferred. Please note, this position requires early morning, evening and weekend recruitment responsibilities.

The exact salary will be determined by prior experience and placement on the salary scale negotiated by the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College
