Salary: 

Hiring Range $105,390 - $163,495 (additional compensation for doctorate)

Salary placement commensurate with experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Master’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution and one year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

 

 

Preferred

  • Doctorate degree
  • Experience in counseling and/or student support services program administration or other closely related administrative responsibilities, preferably at the post-secondary level
  • Experience with Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) initiatives and services
  • Experience in providing services to an ethnically diverse student population

General Description:

Under general direction, has principal administrative responsibility and oversight for the operation and management of the Counseling Department, Admissions & Records, Welcome Center, the Office of Relations with Schools (ORS), Articulation, the Career/Transfer Center, Associated Students of Merced College (ASMC), Student Activities, and the Student Success and Support Programs (SSSP) at various District locations.  The Dean also provides supervision and direction regarding the District’s outreach and recruitment programs, probation, student grievances, and related student success initiatives and activities addressing SSSP mandates in the areas of Counseling, Orientation, Assessment, Education Planning and Follow-Up services.

The Dean of Student Services has broad scope in the development, interpretation and implementation of major policies and procedures pertaining to the Student Services areas assigned by the District, including the selection and evaluation of faculty, management and classified staff, preparation of faculty assignments, curriculum development, scheduling of classes and program budget development and monitoring.  In addition, the Dean is expected to lead counseling faculty, staff and colleagues toward innovative student success practices and effective student learning outcomes and program review.

The incumbent is expected to collaborate closely with the Dean of Student Equity and Success and with academic and student services departments to contribute to the efforts in educating, serving and retaining students and special population groups identified by the District.

Essential Functions

The employee performs the following, and related tasks, as interpreted by the supervisor and in keeping with the standards set by management and interpreted by the supervisor.  This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties but covers the important job tasks.

  • Provides administrative leadership for Counseling, Student Activities, Community Outreach and Re-Entry Services, and the Student Peer Assistance Programs.
  • Works closely with the Faculty Leads for the Counseling Cohort/Area in administering a comprehensive program of counseling and other student support services.
  • Provides leadership in the development and implementation of Student Services programs and services.
  • Oversees budgets and staff scheduling in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Facilitates the coordination of services among student services programs.
  • Participates in the planning, coordination and implementation of the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) services.
  • Responsible for evening supervision on the main campus in rotation with other college administrators.
  • Interprets, implements and reviews College/District Board policies in Student Services.
  • Participates in educational planning and policy development in conjunction with the other academic and/or student services deans and administrators.
  • Initiates goals and objectives consistent with the mission and goals of the District and participates in the planning and program development for the programs assigned to the Counseling and Student Services area.
  • Participates in the hiring, supervision and evaluation of faculty, management and classified staff in the area of Counseling and Support Services.
  • Develops, prepares, and monitors the planning and implementation and evaluation efforts of the programs assigned to the Counseling and Support Services area.
  • Maintains appropriate evaluative methodology, statistical reports, and other records to assess accomplishments and define departmental needs.
  • Serves on District standing and ad hoc committees as required.
  • Encourages a climate of innovation and continuous program improvement and collaboration.
  • Develops and monitors program reviews for departments/programs including student learning and service area outcomes, assessments, and evaluation of data for the purpose of program improvement.
  • Works closely with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in order to assess and evaluate the counseling department and other student programs and services.
  • Recommends to the Vice President, Student Services/Assistant Superintendent the development of policies and procedures needed to successfully implement goals and objectives.
  • Serves as the Chief Student Services Officer in the absence of the Vice President of Student Services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Student Services/Assistant Superintendent.

  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals
