The College of New Jersey is currently seeking a full-time experienced mechanical equipment specialist for its Facilities HVAC Shop to perform varied types of work involving the installation, inspection, repair, servicing and maintenance of commercial/industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigerant systems and related equipment, including motors, feed and vacuum pumps, blowers, compressors, thermostats, pneumatic, electric and electronic control systems. 


  • Provides preventive maintenance to all HVAC related systems and equipment.Inspects said systems and equipment to determine what action is needed.Replaces parts as required; lubricates parts as needed; and, cleans and adjusts components as necessary.Reports all deficiencies to supervisor.

  • Installs, repairs and/or maintains motors, feed and vacuum pumps, ductwork, grilles, conveyors and blowers, compressors, thermostats, pumps, filters, screens, condensers, and other heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems.Adjusts, repairs and installs pneumatic, electric and electronic control systems.

  • Analyzes all mechanical systems through the energy management system computer, and makes adjustments and repairs to said mechanical systems and equipment as necessary.


  • Responds to emergencies and other situations that may require the use/presence of staff knowledgeable about mechanical related systems and equipment both during and outside of normal working hours, including weekends, on-call coverage, and emergency response.

  • Knowledgeable in preventive maintenance of all types of HVAC systems, including those served by central chilled water and steam.

  • Ability to install, repair and/or maintain all types of HVAC systems, including those served by central chilled water and steam.

  • Works from mechanical sketches, schematics, plans, and specifications in accordance with the mechanical code or approved trade practices and established procedures.

  • Ability to overhaul pumps, compressors, and related equipment, installing new parts as needed; and, replaces bearings, shaft sleeves, gaskets and packing as necessary.

  • Ability to analyze the problems involved in the maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; and, have to ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, colleagues and clients.

  • Ability to prioritize work in a high volume, fast-paced environment.

  • Will be required to respond to off-hours calls for service.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma; three (3) to five (5) years of broad industrial/commercial experience in work involving the installation, inspection, repair, servicing and maintenance of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and related equipment; knowledge of mechanical systems through technical schooling or on the job training desired; possession of valid driver’s license in good standing issued by state of residence is required; Required to hold an approved EPA universal certificate to work with refrigerants.


  • Experience needs to have been within the last five years and preferrably in an institutional setting such as a college or hospital.
